I've wanted a bonsai tree since Karate Kid - I'm told they're not as much work as you might think unless you're compulsive about the pruning.

I'd love to have something like the third group of trees separated amongst nondescript square white vases.

That forest grouping is quite famous:

John Naka's bonsai masterpiece Goshin, on display at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum of the National Arboretum in Washington, DC. It consists of 11 Foemina juniper trees (Juniperus chinensis 'Foemina'), representing Naka's 11 grandchildren.

In a world of instant gratification, I guess I'm looking for something with a long-term goal. Or perhaps something that will never be truly finished.

Truly incredible, lefty. Bonsai has been for me one of those things that always makes me pause in the moment to apprehend it.

May I ask how is it that the leaves become miniaturized to match the trees? I've never understood that.

I have seen that before. It is truly beautiful in every way.

If you own something like that, and you forget to water it, and it dies, what do you do?

The other Japanese pruning tradition. Seppuku.

Without Bansai, you have only yourself to trim.

Does anyone know a website that can help decide what type of tree to go with? Maybe visual representations of the seeds?

I highly doubt it, a couple of examples are probably second generation property, or more...
