Geek Squad registry cleanup

Thread Starter
I recently dropped off my computer at best buy because I was having problems. They offered this registry cleanup service for $130. Is this a ripoff or worth it?

geek squad is way overpriced. They charge $299 to come to your home and remove a virus. My company charges $70 an hour with a 2 hour cap for that, with 90 day warranty. You could of found someone to do a direct connect to your computer and clean your registry for about $50 or $60 bucks. (Just type in remote computer repair on google) Honestly, computer service in general is a rip-off(my company included). edit- for registry cleaning we charge $70

I think all computer services like this is a rip off, do some googling and figure it out yourself and you will save a lot of money.

Mac geeks . . . question.

A pop-up filled my safari screen and as I was trying to get rid of it apparently I downloaded a .exe file. I saw the thing being downloaded, but couldn't react in time and as safari was set to private browsing I have no idea what was downloaded.

a) how do I find it?
b) how do I get rid of it?
c) how do I kill the fuckers that sent it my way?

Thanks,

lefty

Cleaning your reg is not difficult. I used to utilize a program called regking or something like that...it worked well as a supplement (keep in mind this was probably 2005 or so).

Waste of $130. Cleaning the registry will not impact performance or improve your computer in any measurable way. If they say it will speed things up, they're bull shitting you or they're morons.

It was downloaded to wherever safari normally downloads things to. An exe cannot be run on os x without emulation software though, so you're not at risk to anything.

I ca'nt remember the last time I even bothered with something like that. The nice thing about vista is doesn't seem prone to get worse over time like xp and older MS OSes.

here i'll teach you how to do it for free. love me.

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

download, click on registry, scan then clean.

make sure when it asks you if you want to back up the registry you do so.

also you should probably run the other cleaning utilities b/c it sounds like you aren't computer saavy and probably have like 2 years of back cookies and shit.

I used to do Reg Cleans with Ccleaner as a free service of part of the "Free" tuneup as a Staples easy tech.
