I really often wonder why men put up all these mental blocks to women that they can ask out. Waitress? nope. Shopgirl? nope. Bartender? nope. Random girl I met at the coffee shop? nope. Girls I meet at the bar? nope.

And before you know it, you've got excuses to not talk to every girl you ever meet. That is about the dumbest way to live life ever. People really need to stop being scared of living. If there is attraction between you and a girl, then talk to her.

I say that, though, because I'm the type that regrets the opportunities I miss, rather than regretting my failures.

+1, it's been said a million times, but what's the worst that could happen? If she says no, you end up exactly where you started, no worse. If she laughs you out of the store and points you out to all the other SA's, then you may want to consider shopping elsewhere ; )

yes, and she didn't appreciate it at all

my feeling used to be that it wasn't nice - she can't really just walk away.

that doesn't mean I haven't done it.

It can be difficult to distinguish attraction and friendliness.

I've only asked out a hostess at a restaurant and that went well. However, she knew me as a regular, so it wasn't a completely random, first-time thing. You'd be surprised how often a girl will say yes. I can only wonder how many amazing experiences with great women I've missed out on by not talking to them. It seems every time I do get proactive and talk to them, things go a lot smoother than our pessimistic imaginations predict.

This takes time. It will come with experience operating.

+1, but then again I do it quite often anyway. They are practically being paid to be nice to you, but something about a girl in uniform is hot, and the prospect of me dropping lots of cash in front of them can definately make it all work. I usually get the girl to help find me some stuff in various sizes, then I ask her for her opinion at the changerooms a few times. Then I'll either chat her up at the cashier, or after buying stuff I'll come back with the bag in hand, say thanks, and then make a joke along the lines of "I'd like to see you again, but I don't really need any more pants... then something along the lines of "let's go get a coffee", or "I'm having a party next week", etc. PS - funny story. I generally look for s-xs tops and 28 pants. So this really cute girl was helping me out in a store, but she was probably 4-5 inches taller then me, so it was a bit awkward. She asks me "Is there anything I can get you", without missing a beat I smirked a little and said "uh, yeah, do you come in a small, or maybe an extra small?"

Yes, and here's an example that didn't turn out all that well.

She worked at a chain bookstore in one of the local malls. Appearance-wise, she was my type: Petite, trim body, dark hair, Asian features, and eyeglasses that gave her an "intellectual" look. She gave me her phone number when I asked for it, and we went out for dinner and a movie a few nights later.

We got along very well, and at the end of the evening (no sex, but a pretty hot goodnight kiss) she told me that she'd like to see me again. But I never called her again, for two reasons: First, she was too young for me (I was 24; although she had just graduated from high school, she was still only 17). Second, she wasn't the intellectual type at all -- she had been a cheerleader in high school and was actually kind of dumb and shallow. I've never been able to get along with that "type" for very long, so I decided not to waste each other's time.
