On the internet, everyone is a BJJ black belt and has thrown more punches in REAL fight that Mike Tyson in fake (inside the ring) ones.

You'll gain a little bit of muscle in the beginning...but really that's just muscles you haven't been using getting toned. You probably won't make any real noticeable gains as if you were weightlifting. I'd recommend joining a boxing gym...save you a lot more money per month over muay thai. Muay Thai & BJJ are pretty trendy right now, so they can charge whatever they want. The park district gym by me only charges $10 a month, and some of the guys training here are Golden Gloves amateurs. Boxers at the gym I'm at seem to do a lot of pull-ups, which does give you some muscle development.

Oh and btw good luck trying to choke someone out in a street fight. Clearly you've never been in one. I also don't get why you wouldn't want to be the guy throwing straights. When you get into a street fight you just go straight to the basics. I tuck my chin in and just start throwing straights.

Hitting the bag will get you into shape. Plus, you'll get good at hitting things. I know plenty of jacked guys, including guys who are really pretty decent grapplers, who can't throw a decent punch or kick. Someone who has actual knowledge of physiology, correct me, but you build up lots of fast twitch muscles practicing boxing or kickboxing that you will not get from lifting. You will probably not, however, get a lot of bulk. You need to lift for that.

It really depends on the school. Most people equate BBJ with Gracie Barra, but other schools (Moreira, for example, or schools that trace back to Carlos rather than Helio Gracie) have less of an emphasis on the ground fighting aspect, and more on Vale Tudo techniques.

I'm probably the only one. It's pretty embarassing.

I'm not sure what it costs these days, but it was pretty reasonable a few years back. They definitely offer a free trial class. Here's the contact info:

Bruce Lee tried weights and then stopped / went back to body weight exercises. Topic related: This guy looks pretty muscular and seems quite strong just using exercises similar to those in martial arts.
