Washington, DC Gym Advice

I'll be moving to DC in a few weeks to start my new job (huzzah), and although the building I'll be working in sports a gym, I suspect it will be more along the lines of machines and elipticals than a true gym.

I'm a pretty hardcore lifter (as in squats and deadlifts as opposed to curls and extensions), and don't need all types of fancy machines to do my workouts. For cardio I either run outside or do modified crossfit routines. I prefer that my gym isn't a social-scene nightmare, rather a place where people go simply to work out.

If my buildings gym doesn't fulfill my needs, what gyms do you guys reccomend? I've heard good things about:

Balance Sport and Fitness: 60 dollars a month for a well stocked practical gym that includes kettle-balls and climbing rops, etc. From what I've heard though its a pretty personal-trainer orientated gym, so I don't know what it will be like if I just work out on my own.

Primal Fitness: offers crossfit and parkour classes, in addition to judo and yoga. A little on the expensive side, but they offer some pretty badass classes. I don't think they have a free weight area though for non class time.

LA Boxing: supposedly offers great classes and a pretty well rounded gym. I haven't done too much research on it though.

I'll be living right around Dupont/Adams Morgan/U-Street, so it seems most gyms are fairly close. I'd love to be able to walk/run to the gym and have it not be a total schlep to get to.

So, Washington, DC SF'rs, what gym do you recommend and why?

I think Balance may be what you are looking for. You should also check out Knox Boxing and Fitness, located at 18th and Florida. No frills, lots of free weights, and boxing classes that will kick your ass. I think it has 24/7 access as well.

I know Sports Club LA had a gym in DC but don't know now. If its still there I'd sign up for that. Been there several times.

For those who know, how would you compare WSC with Gold's? I will get a discount on both thru my employer, and an especially nice one on WSC. I use almost all free weights, but will be doing light cardio (rowing) as well.

Definitely Balance. That's where I go, and I love it. No frills, and you can do everything from gymnastics rings to Olympic lifts without getting strange looks.

Do the owners/gym-goers "look-down" if I don't subscribe to the whole personal training thing? Or would you recommend at least trying a session or two to get familiar with the equipment?

No. Mark and Graham are great guys. They're perfectly friendly with me, and I'd never ever use a personal trainer. The whole place is pretty informal.

+1 for Balance

I just recently started training at Balance after dropping in to one of the CrossfitDC classes and I love it. Not a ton of space but all of the functional equipment you could want for $65/month. And they have tires! Tire flips FTW!

Do they teach boxing or is it a cardio class with boxing elements?

I've been going to a WSC for about a year and its OK. Tons of cardio equipment but only 2 squat racks, not much room for DL's and it gets crazy crowded from 4 - 7. But, if you go in the AM and weekends they have enough basic equipment and you can get in a good workout. I assume you won't be needing a trainer, but they are awful, only one of them is in decent shape. Over the weekend I watched this one trainer put a 50 year old guy through a workout with cleans and over-head presses. Guy clearly didn't know how to do cleans and I'm surprised he didn't hurt himself badly.

I haven't been to a Golds in a while, but they are pretty much the same thing now - corporate gym trying to push as many people through as possible.

Real boxing, not tae-aeroboxing marketed to cute girls in spandex. Each month, Knox holds an eight-class "bootcamp" teaching all the basics (conditioning, punching, footwork, defense). I highly recommend it if you're at all interested in learning boxing.

Look into the downtown YMCA. Definitely no weird vibe. A lot of free classes thrown in, and discounted rates for other classes, but the value is really in the pool and courts, which you may not be interested in. You employer may get you a discount there -- many seem to. Think it's $70 per month retail, no contract required.

I visited Primal Fitness on Saturday. It is smaller than I expected, and as the name suggests, primal. The first floor is devoted to parkour and crossfit and the second-story studio hosts judo and yoga. I noticed dumbbells lined up against the wall on the first floor, but I didn't see any other free weights. I think it's a class-based gym (fees are for classes rather than a monthly membership), not a gym you visit on your own time to pump iron.
