Thanks for all the responses! Really helped a lot.

Felt like it wasn't worth spending more..since he's not interested in leather. And at least the bag didn't have a huge damn triangle decisions.gif or (I HOPE AT LEAST) crappy straps facepalm.gif

 

By the way, does anyone have stylish suggestions for wallets? So far I'm deciding between drawing a design for a wallet I'll enjoy with Bea at April in Paris and Valextra. I haven't visited the store in SF but from the swatches online I think the turquoise would look fabulous (I like bright colors shog[1].gif) Maybe Rach can help me here, how do you like the turq? And what are you opinions on Vert Fuelliage?

The Valextra http://www.mrporter.com/product/316833 has pretty good leather quality...the color is pretty nice but I'd like less card compartments. Any suggestions sirs? butbut.gif

^There's no real comparison between April in paris and Valextra. Valextra is a decent brand andI I've had a number of pieces, but bea's stuff is much better, and given that you can customize what you want with her, the choice is clear.

She's also very friendly and will give you her opinions on colors and such.

Also, glad you chose Jack Spade (or something non-Prada). Once my favorite "go to" brand for modern, minimal, well made stuff that few under the radar, Prada's totally lost its appeal for me; while some of the top runway items are still neat, the basic sport, black nylon, and even regular leather items have almost gotten into CHAV territory.

Came across a luxury handbag sale here in Singapore (ladies' bag)

Got to say that even on discount they are some of the most blatant ripoffs- no leather (at most, corrected grain), synthetics, and monograms plastered all over. F for Fendi, C for Coach, LV, Prada, Burberry. Not even the designs are good.. I really can't fathom the psychology of lady handbags. Especially among these high disposable income & zero taste crowd.

Edit: as for fake or not, I think they are original, the store was legit and the stuff I see from aforementioned brands at their flagship stores are along that quality level anyways. Sad. I dunno about the other side of the globe.

^Well, the thing is that all of these brands also have responded to growing demand and global economic concerns to release "entry" level products that are embarrasing crap. Fendi, Coach, etc. all have the equivalent of "outlet" goods that are truly awful.

BUT, that's why it is important always to see and feel in person, because they also have good stuff. LV's seasonal and runway men's items are very well made, and often have very minimal branding. Same with Prada. Gucci, too, can put out a very nice product, but it's a FAR cry from the awful canvas "G" crap. As well, Fendi's "selleria" line has some good stuff; I saw a pebbled leather messenger bag last season that was really, really well made.

DesignerValet, AFAIK all the Krakoff stuff is China as well (at least bags; RTW may be different). I saw both the NY store and one near me here in Japan just from curiousity, and they were all MIC. Quality was quite good, but the prices were the same as you'd expect for Made in Italy, France, etc. As such, I just couldn't see myself paying $1600 for a made in china calf leather bag.

I often use (now defunct) Lambertson Truex as an example; post-Samsonite their men's bags were made in China. Quality was quite good, and prices were $400-700. For a well made bag for $695, I don't mind that it is made in China. Charge me $1695 for it and I start to look elsewhere.

Anyone handled Lanvin leather bags lately? How's the quolity? I'm liking their minimal styling and their bags and accesories don't seem to be overly expensive like certain pices of their clothing. Which on the other hand could imply that they are not that special in contruction and materials. I do have an pouch from them from some time ago which most certainly was of a poor non aniline dyed lether which flecked quite quickly.

 

Any imput is appericiated.

^I have not been impressed with the quality of Lanvin's bags (or even the RTW, for that matter). Earlier this year I got the hard sell on a printed nylon/leather tote that felt cheap to the touch- but it was on sale for "only" $700.

What I find irritating about Lanvin is that they seem to have two distinct levels of quality: good (made in Italy or France, almost exclusively over $2k) and absolute garbage (made in Turkey, China, etc. and priced from $500-2000).

Found this Made in USA Coach large size rucksack. Thick, nice leather, good construction and hardware, no logos. Price was very fair, too. From the datecode/serial number, it was made in 1998... so obviously even into the 1990's Coach was making decent stuff in the USA. I thought by then it had all been moved to china.

I don't know the date they moved to China, but doing the 90s the quality was still good.

+1, my feelings exactly. It's a shame, because the styling on some was quite interesting. Anyway, this is one reason why Lanvin (in addition Ferragamo and Dior) are on my "no go" bag list... except at STEEEEEP discount.

In general, with brands that are not primarily bag/luggage makers, we have to remember that (1) the creative directors generally don't handle bags, leaving them to a design team or an accessories designer, (2) the design teams often have little control over the actual manufacture/license of the item (which is generally not in house) and (3) anytime the budget/accounting guys get involved to make decisions, they are going to cut corners.

I've HEARD that in the past few seasons lanvin has been more receptive to the major complaints of its bags falling apart, but I don't know how much of this has carried over into the men's lines (mostly it was for the famous women's handbag that was $2000 and basically fell apart like a rotten fruit).

Anyone have suggestions for a bag similar to the Phillip Lim 31 hour bag, but with a long strap (need a strap for commuting)?

 

I thought about getting a strap to the Lim, but not sure this is possible due to the zipper placement.

 

I'm planning on using it for a work bag to carry a laptop (company assigned which is heavy and big unfortunately), papers, wires, etc. I'm looking for nice leather, something that is durable, and looks nice enough for corporate law. Under $1K if possible. Thanks.

I was considering trying to get a leather worker to attach a long strap to the Lim, but I'm not sure that would work due to the placement of the zippers.

 

I'd use it for a work bag to carry a laptop (large and heavy company assigned, unfortunately), wires, papers, etc. I'm looking for a similar look, nice leather, durable, corporate law appropriate, and hopefully under $1K. Thanks.

Reminds me of Filson.

Rach, Wolverine is making luggage these days under the 1000 mile line. They have a messenger that looks interesting. Def the country style so it's probably something I'll end up with. It should work well when a 257 is too much and my SBL satchel is not enough.

Can anyone help identify the season/quality of this MMM briefbag? I tried searching and found nothing, and the MMM site archives are a pain to navigate. Having read this thread, it seems like the quality for all MMM bags are generally good, however this one is a canvas bag that I'm on the fence about, and I would assume most comments were for the leather collection. The canvas is not waxed so a little splash test just got absorbed, and the interior lining is a cotton that is "loose" against the bag structure.





To sort of hijack my own reply, did the quality for Jack Spade go down significantly that there is so much disdain for them on SF? I'm looking to replace my JS canvas messenger that has been used nearly daily for about 7 years- the quality has been phenomenal, though im now getting the seams blown out on both sides where the strap connects to the bag. (can post pics of that issue too).
