Quality is pretty good but I don't like the styling or the high price. The styling sometimes looks so rugged as to be unrefined... like they walked into a tannery, grabbed the first hide off the wall and stitched it as-is.

I like a "washed" style bag, and I like an antiqued finish... but many of the il bisonte bags just look... meh. And, for the price (which is quite high) I want a lot more than "meh." Quality of the hides, stitching, etc. though are quite good so if you see a bag you really like, I doubt you'll have issues with the quality. And, it will probably age nicely; I have some friends with old bags and the patina on the leather is very nice.

It is my understanding that LV's "Made in Spain" pieces are actually produced in Loewe factories.

The zip-up tote from the Soana line was the first designer bag I REALLY wanted. At $2,200, it was actually decently priced (especially compared to today's runway bags) but I was in high school at the time so it might as well been $100k. I did get a couple of the Groom SLGs for Christmas that year, though.

I remember back in the days of eLuxury their styling was really terrific, poorly made or otherwise. The latest logoed bags Saks is hawking, though, even look cheap.

^Ah, I miss eluxury. They even had ck Collection for a brief time. frown.gif

Anyway, I like the SS 2012 Bally collection... relaxed, classic, and decent quality. Prices are also fair, compared to the other 'players.' see what you can get from Gucci these days for $1400. Won't be much. frown.gif

See the whole collection here:

Rach, I like the first Bally bag, really neat.

I came across this Piquadro bag that I can get for 159 Euro instead of 405 Euro sarcasm.gif (outrageous retail price)

but I also like the Royal RepubliQ Nano Big Zip for 144 Euro instead of 170 Euro

Let me know what you think and which one I should buy.

Do you think the Royal RepubliQ bag is appropriate for business ?

Thanks

I'm usually not a fan of piquadro, but that one doesn't look bad at all and 159 euro is not a bad price.

NOT a fan of the second bag at all... don't like the handles, leather type, or style. It also looks a little too casual for work.

Thanks Rach for your opinion.

However after much thinking I just have the "coup de coeur" for the bag I posted in previous page the Estime Bertrand bag in navy blue for 205 Euro with a coupon biggrin.gif !

I will post some pictures as soon as I get my hands on it if you are interested. I think you could get it for 184 (detax) + 20 (shipping with Fedex to USA/Japan)  so total 204 Euro = 270 Dollars devil.gif

Hi Rach,

How is the quality of Bally? It seems that Bally is one of those high end brands that people all know about, but few people actually own anything from it. Thanks!

Hopefully some others will chime in as well. Overall, I think Bally quality is decent, about the same as the other "major" players like Gucci and Prada, though not as expensive.

However, not all their bags are created equal (same with Prada/Gucci.) The entry level nylon bags and such are often quite unsubstantial, but the seasonal/runway collections (like those I posted above) are quite good. So, while not an unqualified ringing endorsement, nevertheless if you are in the market for a brand bag in the $1000+ range, I think bally is not a bad choice.

p.s. don't buy vintage; they had some problems back in the 80's/90's. The bally I'm discussing is recent... as in the last 3-4 years. I wouldn't get "old" bally.

what do you think about Marni mens bag from recent seasons? I saw a bright neon tote I loved but the price didn't speak to me at $900+. Hoping it is worth it at about 40%-50% off.

I'm a huge Marni fan, so you're not going to get an unbiased answer from me, but I personally really like Marni's bags. I really respond to Marni's aesthetic, and their prices are usually not as crazy as the larger houses. Another thing: everything Marni sells is made in Italy, mostly (if not entirely) in-house.

Marni boutiques have sales in May and December; the first cut is 30% off, the second 50%. Unfortunately, New York is the only one that still carries menswear; SCP, LA, and Las Vegas are women's only.

If you don't mind waiting, try the Marni outlets. Desert Hills and Woodbury are one year behind (i.e. they just got S/S 2011) and everything starts at 55% off retail. Around Memorial Day and Christmas, they take an extra 25% off. Sometimes, they have bigger sales: last fall I got a $1,200 tote from FW '08 for under $300. The Orlando outlet carries older collections (early 00's, etc), but what's left is usually pretty hideous.

Rach, I like that ice blue Bally tote. The texture on the brown ones look a bit wonky, though.

Bally must be substantially more popular in Asia and Europe than it is in the US; I can't remember the last time I saw one.

Had the leather duffle with multicolor stripe was 50% off I think when I bought it. Nice design and ok leather, was ok at the price I paid but ended up selling as I thought it stood out too much. My happier with my trusty Filson duffle in green.

I would guess the same. Isn't Loewe LMVH as well? I love the leather on loewe though so supple.

Doesn't Mr. Porter have some Marni? What about Barneys? Should be some good sales there

I got this Bally messenger bag last year. I love it - the leather is soft, but still has form. My only complaint is the strap is made from some heavy duty canvas that is very stiff. I looked at a lot of different places - Bally had the best price between the typical high end brands, and it has very subtle branding, which is a big plus for me. I hate having the logo plastered all over the bag.
