Givenchy is just awful. Too bad, really, because I like the way some of their bags are styled. Their clothes are absurdly-priced, as well: $900 for a printed cotton shirt that's made in Portugal?

This wasn't the case a few years ago. Our standards haven't changed, but prices for most brands have increased dramatically while quality has dipped or fallen off a cliff entirely.

Brands I own:

-LV: in my experience, very good quality and high prices, but most of my pieces are older. My mom bought an LV tote last year and the strap SNAPPED off just above the mounting hardware after only two months. The store manager refused to exchange it and insisted on a repair; mom only got her way after she sent corporate a nastygram.

-Hermes: my one bag from them is canvas Fourre-Tout tote, which cost under $500 when I bought it a few years ago. Very nicely-made and finished, but good luck getting canvas anything for less than $1k these days.

-Marni: love this brand, though few others do. I find the quality of their bags to be quite good, and their prices (relatively) reasonable.

-Gucci: one of my first designer bags. Quality is fair, though the fabric is wearing at one corner. Would not buy again, especially at today's prices.

-Valentino: nice materials, quality of assembly decidedly less so. Traded with Rach on this bag so can't complain about the price.

Have heard good things about Celine and Proenza Schouler, but get ready to pay up for the combination of nice styling and decent quality.

All my Vuitton bags are in good quality. Prada's quality better than Gucci, and I don't like the Gucci price.

DesignerValet, do you mind tell me what are the actions taken of Vuitton company after they receive the angry letter from your mum?

.

+1. Excellent post and I agree. And the Versace tote you traded me is still holding up well. One of my go-to Spring/Summer totes.

Anyway, just to support what you said... the buffalo skin Jil sander large tote/duffle I've posted before from SS 2004 was $1255 at full retail. Riri zippers, very thick canvas lining, excellent quality on the hide/skin. Messengers and duffles last season or two were $2500-2600 with cheaper lining and worse hardware.

This practice has led to the rise of many smaller, better makers becoming popular. There will always be those wanting PRADA or GUCCI, but I think many customers are getting smarter (thanks in part to sites like SF!)

Also, just to clarify... my issue with LV is only that every six months they raise the price. An $800 bag a few years ago is now $1400. The quality is still very good, though.

She wanted an exchange or credit towards another bag, but the manager kept insisting that the only thing she could offer was a repair, which was absurd given that A) the bag was all of two months old, B) it could very well just happen again, C) she'd lose use of the bag for six-to-eight weeks, and D) the leather wouldn't match the other pieces and there's no guarantee they'd ever tan evenly.

She finally gave up and left the bag to be sent for repairs. A few days later, she got one of those customer service surveys in her email box and filled in all zeros (or its equivalent) and wrote that she was hugely disappointed and would be letting her friends know what passed for post-purchase care at LV. Within a day, the same manager she'd spoke with before called and said a giftcard equal to the price of her bag had been issued and was waiting at the store.

They've actually calmed the rate of increases lately- there hasn't been one in almost a year. I check periodically to see if the pieces I already own have "appreciated" in value tongue.gif

Chanel is the one that blows my mind. A Neiman Marcus saleswoman I talked to said her store had a waitlist of 100+ people for the $4300 jumbo flap, a bag that was selling for half that when she started working there five years ago.

The slouchy character of this messenger is refreshing, not sure how well I can pull off the wet-leather look though, but I do like it. Nero Spinnaker Messenger Bag by Bottega Veneta is $1,900

I have an Everlast messenger bag that is made of same material.. It's not going to rip (ever, due to the characteristics of the fabric) but damn is it prone to getting scuffs and holes.
I really don't see the appeal of the bag. Reminds me of the patagonia jacket I used to own rotflmao.gif

Bonastre:

Got to see this Parisian brand in person and it is quite nice. Clean designs, good leather (vegetable tanned), and it seemed well made. Really liked the shopping bag (first picture):

that Bonastre looks pretty nice... I checked out their site. Where can one find prices on this stuff? I hate sites w/o prices...

^ L'eclaireur (via farfetch) has them.

The store also has nice valextra and felisi collections

Yoo:

Thanks for answering the Bonastre stockist question (totally missed the original question...sorry KN).

I unfortunately can't remember whether that Isaac Reina style is available for spring, but it seems to be re-issued most seasons. I saw it in a nice olive grey for Fall 2012.

Have you considered brands like M.A+, Guidi, Augusta, and etc.? While they tend not to showcase it that much, all of them usually offer some clean, semi-classic styles. The leathers and hardware used are top notch. However, they often lack lining and multiple interior pocket / storage if that is a deal-breaker.

...

Undercover pouches (they're at least bag related) for Spring 2012 (via Tres Bien):

Thinking about getting the Vassili PM from Louis Vuitton. I'd get it in the dark anthracite or whatever color they call it. I had issues finding an image and they don't let you copy images from their website, so here's a link:

http://www.louisvuitton.com/front/#/eng_US/Collections/Men/Mens-Bags/products/Vassili-PM-TAIGA-M32640

Here's a pic of the glacier color (mine would be darker):

There's a strap too, although I might use it without the strap for meetings and with when traveling.

Good idea? Bad?
