The Definitive MANBAG Thread Part I: 2009-2014 - Page 46

Been away for a bit w/ work, but had some time this morning and thought I'd update. This spring, as the weather gets nicer, I've been alternating this brown Valentino bag (I also have a gray one in a different type of leather that I posted last year): I really like the size for work/travel. It fits papers, folders, a laptop, without being TOO large. I also like all the pockets to keep things organized.

Bumping because I need a bag. The one below is something of a holy grail (can't even decide which colourway I like better), but at over $1500 I just don't know if I can get there. So, post up some good weekenders or totes.

^I believe so, yes. It looks like the glossy/coated goatskin versions he did for AW08/09. I had the tote version of that bag in olive green, and they also did a large Novak like that one. They were really nice bags; excellent quality and unique styling. As I mentioned in another post, the McQueen (mainline) bags are really top notch and well done. the McQ diffusion line bags are nothing to get excited about, but the top stuff is really nice. It's expensive, but in line with the other major players, but with equal or better quality and generally far better styling, and often innovative treatments to the leathers. On the previous page you posted a McQueen/Samsonite nylon/mock croc bag. I used to have that in black. It was made in collaboration for Samsonite Black Label in their facilities (mostly china and eastern europe), and I liked the styling, but it wasn't all that wonderful and was sort of bulky/too much like luggage. This one:

Yes, I saw it from the top and it definitely had the bulk going on. The other issue is that it's a bit too stiff / structured for what I'm looking for right now. I think that Novak still looks too purse-ish. That green tote you just posted is awesome, though. Why'd you part with it?

I actually agree about the Novak, though I find the design still very interesting.

I parted with my tote because the color just didn't go with what I usually wear. It was very military/bohemian esque, which really just isn't my style. It tended to stand out more because generally my clothes are pretty minimal/subdued, so it looked like it was wearing me, not the opposite.

I love that first bag, rach2jlc. My sister always gives me crap for using gold/bronze/brass colored hardware on stuff I make rather than stainless steel or nickel, but I think gold hardware and brown leather is a great look.

so with that said here's how I like it:

I want something soft and drapy and made of leather.

I want a Christian Peau bag, but no stockists and I don't like the only man bag that is on Rakuten

^I'm not too familiar with Christian Peau; can you post a few images and/or give us a review? As for gold/brass hardware, it really just depends on the color/style of the leather on the bag. For black, white, gray, etc. I think gunmetal or palladium hardware looks best. For brown, though, gold or brass can be very nice (as on your bag posted above). What kind of leather is that? Lamb/sheepskin? I have two other versions of the Valentino bag I posted above; one in gray with gunmetal hardware, the other in dark mahogany brown, with brass. I think both would look odd with different colored hardware.

Thanks!

I thought maybe yours was buffalo/bison. It's sort of hard to tell without feeling them in person. Horsehide lining sounds excellent; that's one thing about which I'm really picky... those papery, gross nylon linings are the pits. I like either fabric/canvas, suede, or some sort of leather lining.

What kind of bag is the one you posted? Is it a custom one, or where did you get it?

Yeah, it's a custom bag I made myself. I'm in the process of finding some nice suede; it's perfect for bag linings, which I agree are nylon and similar crap way too often. My grail bag would be a full shell cordovan briefcase, kangaroo or french calf lining. One day...

stole pics off their website. archive used to stock them. not sure anymore. i'm not a bag connoisseur, but leather quality was excellent as was the brass hardware. the leather had a kind of washed treatment and the details were very interesting. archivesf just sent me a pic of the one bag they have left it's priced at 695 which is about the same as what i would pay for full retail plus proxy from japan. -_- i wish it were on sale
