Dipping in the Midwest?

Thread Starter
I just moved from New England to the Midwest recently and was quite shocked at the amount of "dipping" people around here do. While I don't smoke cigarettes regularly, I do smoke them occasionally when drinking and find them somewhat appealing when smoked by the right person, but never in my life knew of a person who dipped/spit tobacco.

This made me wonder, what do you think of smokeless tobacco? How about those of you in the Midwest who have been around it for awhile? Never being a person to shoot down something I've never tried, I tried it. What I got was a nicotine rush followed by a headache (Not to mention the fear that I would wake up with loose tooth). How about everyone else? I'm curious to see if I'm overreacting, because I really did find it repulsive (even when I was the one doing the spitting). I feel like I am very open-minded to most things, but, in this case, may have reached my limit.

Ohhh yea.... I went to college in southern indiana (think, Kentucky border). I saw more dip than I care to know. Cups filled with it in the frat house, used wads in the sinks, it was nasty as shit but I swear about 20% of the guys I knew did it.

Hell, one of my buddies was in town last month and had two cans on him. Yep, I did it. I have to admit, it gave me a helluva buzz and its still fun to do occasionally, even though it is trashy and you really ahve to rinse your mouth out or you'll puke.

Definetly a midwest thing though

Dipping is good for a quicker buzz than cigarettes, but it's over faster IMO. I used to dip back in the day. Then, I just kind of stopped. Anyway, it's obviously very common in the Midwest, and South I'd imagine, and seen as normal whereas it's probably seen as pretty disgusting in other parts of the country.

I wouldn't mind dip users so much if they didn't do that sort of stuff. When I went to high school for a little while in North Dakota a kid kept of bottle of his spit under his coat jacket so that he could chew during the day. It fell out in the middle of the classroom one day... everywhere that went... bleh.

I grew up in the midwest and I never knew anyone who dipped as far as I can recall... but the midwest is a large and diverse area, I think this is more something you'd find in places like Indiana or Ohio, rather than Chicago/Twin Cities

I find it disgusting, really really disgusting.

I attended high-school in N.W. Arkansas, our class' fund raiser was cleaning up after Razorback home basketball and football games. We'd dump all liquids into buckets and dump. 90% of cups had dip in them.

I've worked with guys who smoked with dip in their mouth.

A co-worker at one of my past blue-collar jobs said (and I quote), "the only time I don't have a dip in is when I'm brushing my teeth or eating pussy. I am single, and if you haven't noticed my teeth are shit.'

People do it in situations when they cannot smoke.

I think in the past people knew smoking was bad, but were misinformed about smokeless tobacco risks hence its prevalence. I also think its more readily available in the midwest/souhtern states than other parts of the country. It is also much easier to quit than cigarettes according to friends who have/do.

That's probably more a function of city life vs. rural life, because in the country right outside Chicago and the Twins people still dip..

I was introduced to it in the military. Used Copenhagen long cut. I stopped using it pretty quickly, because it's so unsightly to spit and have pieces of shredded leaf in between your teeth. Before that, I smoked heavily. I found an alternative, which is Swedish snus. They are recently marketing an American version from Camel, but I don't think the taste or quality is the same as the Swedish variety. Portion snus is a small packet that you place between your gums and upper lip, and it's virtually invisible and is generally spit free. The can comes with a top that functions as a trash can for the used packets. It is far cleaner than both smoking and dipping and some research has shown it to be much safer. My preferred can is General Onyx or Göteborgs Rapé. Now my tobacco use is virtually invisible. I just have to reorder monthly from Swedish Match.

I went to school in Maryland and a lot of guys there thought they were southerners and dipped. I dipped too whenever I was out drinking and enjoyed it (especially because I got a buzz and it fulfilled my nicotine cravings without the cigarette smoke). I don't do it anymore because I began to get freaked out about damage to my teeth and gums. Anyway, it is a digusting habit and I never did it among women or classy company.

My sister's boyfriend dips regularly in bars and they live in manhattan

I am born and raised in DC and went to college in Maine, and I found that a lot of athletes in both places dipped in season, including me. I think it's the mentality that one is not smoking and hurting their lungs and therefore their athletic performance, but can still imbibe in something that gives a buzz. I've since quit, for a few years, and have tried it again with pretty bad results. I couldn't handle the nicotine and got a horrible headache. I'm pretty sure the only reason I stayed with it when I started was to not look like a pansy in front of the older guys who got me started.

A lot of athletes at my high school (particularly my baseball teammates) and college dipped as well. I could never do it as it looked/smelled horrid. I don't smoke either. Maybe nicotine and whiteslashasian were never meant to be...

i didnt even know what dipping was. its pretty much unheard of here. (toronto)

edit-not unheard of where people dont know what chewing tobacco is, but that youd never see anyone do it. and if someone did do it people would be very disgusted and look at them very oddly.
