adult swim is currently airing minisodes of new series "gi joe resolute," which takes the cartoon from the 80s and makes it all grown up. in this story, the stakes are higher and the joes actually fire real bullets, and major characters die. plus the soldiers fire real bullets and the ninjas stab people. fatally. apparently warren ellis wrote it.
