Awesome Bakery in NYC - Magnolia Bakery

I went to this incredible bakery in New York City called Magnolia Bakery. It's on the corner of 50th and 6th ave. The bread pudding is to die for! As typical proof of goodness, there was literally a line out the door for this place.

over hyped although the banana bread pudding is indeed quite good.

I still don't get the fascination with Magnolia Bakery.

Nor for that matter do I get the fascination with Crumbs.

Both are average at best.

Magnolia Bakery? Never heard of it...

oh wait... is that the one with three tourist buses parked in front at any time?

Magnolia is not very good...neither is Crumbs.

The best cupcake I have found so far is from Sweet Revenge. A small shop in the west village, awesome people working there, amazing cupcakes, cozy place for a date, they serve alcohol too.

I agree that the cupcake quality at crumbs is average at best. I've had ones that are rather dry and certainly not worth the $3.75 price.

However, they do excel in variety and innovative flavors - it's hard to pick between 25-30 different types of cupcakes, all of which sound excellent.

I think the quality might have something to do with the fact that I usually get one on my way home, so 8-9 PM (I bet they were better at 11 AM)

The entire concept of "designer cupcakes" and bakeries coming into existence almost solely for cupcakes really annoys me, and I don't get it.

I had some surprisingly good vegan cupcakes from Sticky Fingers in DC. As in, I don't give a crap about veganism, but I'd buy cake there.

I think it's because bakeries like these are very unusual for most people who only get their awful baked goods and breads from supermarkets.

while the original sucks, the other ones suck even more. On a lazy sunday I do go to magnolias to mac on some cupcakes, though.

Designer cupcakes crack me up. Got a "Sprinkles" in my cali nabe. 60 minute lines for cupcakes.

Was never impressed by the magnolia version. Get thee down to Bouley.
Math is straightforward. Elite chef in town decides to make cupcakes and what happens? He makes a better cupcake.

What type of city/town doesn't have at least half a dozen decent small bakeries? I live in KY, and four family owned bakeries come to mind that are with several miles of my house.
