Which size Persols to go with??

So I have been striking out with shades lately, ordering many styles only to have them arrive and not like them. I have been wanting to try both the 649 and 714 Persols for some time so I am going to order, however the 649 comes in 4 sizes and the 714 2 sizes, as listed below:

0714\t(sizes 52/21/140, 54/21/140)
0649\t(sizes 52/20/135, 54/20/140, 56/20/145, 58/20/150)

My question is which size to go with? for the 714 I am def. thinking the larger of the two, meaning the 54's and for the 649's I was thinking the 56's.... pretty much all the shades I have tried recently have been in the 62 or 63 size, but I am assuming measurements are stirctly of the lens and not the frames...so a size 54 or 56 lens in a persol frame may look larger since the frames are plastic and a bit thicker than metal frames holding 62 or 63 lens....

I have a pair of 2817-Ss in 63mm and they are pretty huge. That's the only reference point I can give you.

Without seeing you try on any sizes it is hard to tell what will fit. BUT 56 and up is big. Also you have to take into consideration the bridge too...

It compltely depends on your face.

Do you have triangle, narrow, oval, round, full face?

The size that is the most important is not the lens but the overall across the frame size: lens x 2 + bridge =.....

Persol sunglassess although very nice looking fit horribly. They are heavy and uncomfortable.

^ Disagree, I prefer the fit of 649s to Wayfarers, and they are much lighter than vintage Drifters I've owned. If Persols fit your face, they are plenty comfortable. OP should, of course, try on the different sizes.

Well I would love to try some on before purchasing but no where in all of Boston has either the 649 or 714, and over the past several months I have sent atleast 10 emails to Lux trying to find some sort of Persol contact info or someone to hel me locate a store in the Boston area that has them, but with no response.... Lux has to have the shittiest customer service ever! I would like to never buy anything from them again

Most sunglasses stores carry Persol.. I know even Sunglass Hut has the 649's.

Did you go through all of the stores listed on the Persol website? There is a store locator that has a bunch for Boston.

not any of the ones in Boston, I have been to just about all of them, also checked all the botique sunglasses stores in the area that carry Persol as well as Barneys at Copley which carries Persol, no where has either the 649, 714

^ Nordstrom might also have them as well. If anything, if they don't have them just ask them to order a pair from one of their other locations for you to try on in store.

Lux is known to have terrible customer service. But they carry Chanel, Prada, and most other large names.... they dont care if you like them, youll come back to them. hahaha

I stopped in the Sunglass Hut in Water Tower with the hope of trying on the 714s or the 649s. No dice. They had a pair that were styled sort of similarly, but they were tiny. The guy minding the store knew nothing about anything, so no hope there. Please let us know if you find them anywhere.

yea those tiny ones you speak of are the only thing I have found around town... and they look like shit! I am going to continue the search but will prob. just pull the trigger online and resell if I dont like them... I am leaning toward going with the 54's

I'm also looking for Persols 0714s. Based on the formula isn't the difference between the 52s and the 54s about 4mm across? Is that typically substantial enough to make a huge difference?

BTW There is also a RLPL version of the 0714s maybe you can try those on if they're available simply for a fit comparison. I tried them on in the 52s (I think) and for me anyway it wouldn't hurt if they were a bit wider. Maybe 54s would be better for me but I never thought of myself as being the kind of guy with a fat face.

picked up a pair of these with the blue steve mcqueen lenses, they are pretty sexy. also the formula isnt quite x2 + bridge equals width, because the number 52, 54, 56 etc, is not the distance from side to side, but the largest distance across the lens, which is usually a diagonal.... so there is no real equasion for measuring across based on listed frame size. if anyone is intersted here is a reference for size: I have a decent size head and I got them in 52 and they fit perfect. I could have taken 54 but they rested on my cheeks and I didnt like that. anyone with a "normal size head" could take 52 or 54 for a slightly oversized look. a smaller/narrower faced man/woman could go with 49 (which is also available), and 56+ if you have a giant head, keep in mind though if you have an extraordinarily narrow bridge on your nose or you have no bridge at all (this is a problem for some asians) these may not be the glasses for you.
