Using a Verizon Blackberry's GPS without paying for VZ Navigator?

I'm thinking of getting a Verizon Blackberry for the GPS capabilities, but I learned you have to pay $10/month for the VZ Nav. Is there another way to get the GPS for free, or at least without a subscription?

There are all these apps out there but I'm not sure if I still need to pay for VZ Nav to enable the GPS. Also, if anyone has recommendations on GPS apps I would appreciate it.

Do you work for the government by any chance. I have a VZ Voyager and since I work the government I actually get 15% off my monthly bill. Usage minutes only not the package with GPS or TV. That said, it basically offsets the $12 extra I pay for that junk monthly.

You can download GoogleMaps for free on your Bberry.

The GPS works out of the box. You're paying Verizon to turn on the turn-by-turn directions in their software.

So you can look up directions and follow them manually for free, but you won't get the voice saying "Turn right, go 200ft, etc".

I believe the third party GPS apps (Garmin? Streets and Trips?) will give you turn-by-turn as there's nothing technically preventing this from happening. Google Maps, while a better app than the built in VZ Maps, still doesn't do turn by turn.

if you have some of the newer phones (tour, storm2) the gps works on all apps (including googlemaps) older phones (pearl, etc) will work only with bbmaps
