World's 100 Best Restaurants List Released - Page 3

2 restaurants here in China, and I sure as fuck haven't eaten at either. Note the absence of Korea from that list. Not surprising.

The USA are the single country with the most restaurants in the top 50 in that list. If that's "very few", what would you have thought enough?

What kind of stars are you talking about? Not Michelin stars (which only go up to 3), so what else?

America's rating systems are either the AAA 5 Diamond or the Mobil 5 stars. They're not as prestigious nor do they hold the same power as Michelin, but they work well enough here. In comparison to Michelin, I would generally say that some 5 star/5 diamond places could be 3 Michelin stars, but most would be 2, and that's entirely my thinking and many people disagree.

We want more on the top list!

And they have Le Bec Fin at 5 stars from the Mobil Travel Guide.

Actually, France has 16 to our 12 in the top 100.

China and Japan made the list more than once, but South Korea didn't make the list at all?

It's crazy, but I guess the judges didn't like mayonnaise, ketchup, and squid on everything!

^ Why does it matter? It's not like the number of representatives from a country is a objective measure of its cuisinary tradition (ie a lot of the US-based restaurant ranked serve French cuisine)

The list ranks individual restaurants. Let's talk about that.

Since probably less than 5% of folks on here have been to more than 3 of those restaurants it's hard to have that discussion. If GDL and SoCal would like to have that discussion... I'm all for it. You're right, it's not about culinary tradition... but the list is more about innovative cuisine anyway. It also influences how some international folks spend their travel dollars, yen, euro, and Yuen... so it is good to have a presence.

It isn't a very good list, and I have been to a good number of the restaurants on it.

How did Le Bernardin make it?

If I look at the ones on the list at which I have eaten...

2 The Fat Duck, U.K. (=)
6 Per Se, U.S. (=)
9 Pierre Gagnaire, France (-6)
11 L'Astrance, France (=)
12 The French Laundry U.S. (-7)
14 St. John, U.K. (+2)
15 Le Bernardin, U.S. (+5)
18 L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon, France (-4)
19 Jean Georges, U.S. (-2)
41 Daniel, U.S. (=)
54 L'Arpege, France
58 Le Gavroche, U.K.
59 Chez Panisse, U.S.
64 Le Meurice, France
72 Enoteca Pinchiorri, Italy
73 Le Cinq, France

..the ones that are odd men out for me are St. John, Le Bernardin, and Chez Panisse in that order.

The order isn't too far off, but I would move the current incarnation of the restaurant at the Meurice higher.

Sweden and Finland made a list, that is a real surprise to me. Although NYC Swedish "Aquavit" has an interesting menu.
I should try that Helsinki place.
Café Pushkin in Moscow is great for food and girls watching.
The new place I have never heard of translates as "Barbarians" -nice name for a restaurant in Russia...

they have a panel of judges who vote... and the panel is decidedly eurocentric...

So the second best Japanese restaurant in the world is in.... India.
