#4 Francescana, here in Modena. Fantastic, no doubt.... Friends went and an hour or so after leaving went to a pizzeria to fill up.

Especially since Per Se is in the top 10.

Where's Panda Express on this list?!

From this year's list I have done the following: 6 \tAlinea \tUSA \tThe Acqua Panna Best Restaurant In North America 10 \tPer Se \tUSA \t \t 18 \tLe Bernardin \tUSA \t 24 \tEleven Madison Park \tUSA \t 40 \tMomofuku Ssam Bar \tUSA \t 65\tMomofuku Ko\tUSA 81\tWD~50\tUSA 91\tBlue Hill at Stone Barns\tUSA 95\tMasa\tUSA It seems that the top of the list is much more reliable than the bottom. The idea that Ssam Bar (which I love) is a better meal or more enjoyable experience than Corton or Blue Hill at Stone Barns or Masa or Schwa or TFL (etc., etc.) is pretty laughable. That said, I would rank Alinea-Per Se-Le Bernardin (in that order) as the three best meals I have had. I would be very interested to hear some comparisons between the top US spots and those accross the pond. Everyone seems to think our stuff is overrated. True? False?

I know there's politics about the chef change - in my experience, but L20 was a much better meal than Le Bernardin (both were spectacular). I've heard it's even better since LG left.

The chef change explains the Laundry's enormous fall I think, although having it fall 40+ spots is a bit ridiculous.

I think our food is overrated, yes.

My overseas experience with the list is pretty limited (L'atelier Paris) - but I have an opinion here that I will stand by anyway. 1> The list is made by an advertising company - there are politics involved 2> The statement that food in Europe is overall better than food here is probably true 3> That doesn't mean that the top few restaurants here aren't in the company of the top few restaurants everywhere else. In anything, comparing the best to the best is a bad way to compare. Where is the "average" higher? Most people eat at these restaurants once or twice a year if they are lucky. What are they getting on a Friday or Saturday night in August?

We were treated as friends of the house at Le Bernardin, so my experience may have been a bit out of the ordinary. Though, if what you are saying is true (and I have no reason to doubt it), then it adds even more credence to my "Chicago is the best food city in America" theory.

The list is a joke, and as Russ Points out, it's doing what it's meant to do. I'm very sorry, but I can think of a number of restaurants just in Chicago that should be much higher than most of their American selections. I also think that at this point, they're exposing themselves as a little ignorant with Alinea's ranking and with the Fat Duck. It's just stupidity, but it's just a list. Nothing to get riled up about.
