Having some difficulty with gels

Hey everybody, I hope this hasn't been asked before and hopefully someone here can help me out. Basically about a year ago I got my hair cut from really long (like down past my shoulders super hippy long) to a standard, probably medium length cut. When I first cut it it used to have this natural extreme bounciness (from the previous hair weighing it down all the time). However after a few months that passed away, and ever since then trying to use gel has been difficult to say the least.

Basically my hair always ends up falling flat and just looks really stupid. So for a while I've just been letting fall all natural, which looks okay, but I really liked the way I looked with gel. Any help appreciated, thanks a lot.

i'm not sure if i understood your question, I have spiky hair and i use Hair spray particularly TRESemme' I learned hair gel is really hard to work with and the hair spray i use is easy to work with and it might work to make your hair less flat
the spray i use once you spray it, it seperates your hairs so they aren't really stuck togeather, where gels made my hair stick and i had to work on it for a few minutes to get it kinda right
but i don't know your question, most girls with long hair use hair spray my sister gave me her hair gel, and only uses sprays now
try it out, i hope it works out, let me know if you have any questions

Are you saying that your hair is continually flat as opposed to when you first cut it short? It's possible that your hair is weighed down with crappy products. You might try a clarifier and then a conditioner to improve the health of your hair and remove any crappy product leftover. This might lighten up your hair a bit and restore some of its health.

Try better quality product, and try something other than gel. Different people need different hair products, you're obviously not a gel person, so try another type of product. I've had good experience with wax, specifically Bumble and bumble.

Could be over conditioning, too.

+1 Or even just a crappy / heavy conditioner. Nexxus was always really heavy.

Damn I didn't expect this much help so fast. Thanks a lot guys. Yeah, I'll have to post a pic or video or something later today. But yeah I used to just sweep gel through through my hair, and it had no trouble staying up and looking completely fine all day long. However, now I try to do that and it just falls flat and the same gel I was using didn't seem to help.

So I've been trying different things, one of which was something called Joico Spiker. Definitely strong stuff but it's hard to evenly distribute throughout my hair. I never even considered the conditioner thing though, should I just stop using it altogether?

I've been reading about pomade which I might have to try. But it's been an ongoing battle, I hope these uploaded pics work. Definitely not the best in the world, but I took the one with me with short hair not long after I got my hair cut initially, so that was basically the look I've been going for since my hair started screwing up. Thanks again for all your help.

Yeah, don't be afraid to keep on experimenting with products like creams and pomades, but also how you use each one. For example, your hair may respond better to putting a product on while it's wet and letting it dry, then breaking it up after to get rid of the wet look (mine does). Or it may look better if you put the product on dry hair, giving a lighter control to the direction your hair naturally falls (my hair looks flat if I let it dry in it's natural position sans product). I'd definitely move away from gels and more towards creamier, thicker products that won't cake up on your hair.
