The Egg Chair - Page 3

Here is a mention of the couch: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egg_(chair)

The Egg was (as was the Swan) designed as a couch also - though the actual piece was thought to be a figment of someone's imagination, fed by the existence of the Swan-couch. While the Swan-couch is still in production, only a handful of Egg-couches have ever been made. A few were made for the Radisson Hotel, and a few years back, some were made as a "special edition" couch. The price was quite high - about 400.000 dkr., the equivalent of 60,000 USD.
Still haven't found pictures though. Maybe it's just a myth.

The Egg sofa exist but there has only been made a few of them. The sofa have been on auctions a couple of times and reached high prizes. So It is not a myth, as you also can see in the picture below from the SAS Royal Hotel, Copenhagen, 1956-61. IMO the sofa is not as elegant as the chair. The design looks rather clumsy and the egg concept is not working as a sofa. THE CHAIR: The problem I and many others seems to have with The Egg chair is its seating - it is not as comfortable as you would imagine a chair like this would be. You sit in a straight "conservative" position and the pillow also slides forward. Disturbing as you should relax when seated. The original or first Egg chairs did not have this problem since there was no pillow to slide. The foot on those first chairs also differs from the one of today. If you are going to buy the Egg chair remember two things: Only Fritz Hansen got the right to produce it, so only the ones from Fritz Hansen can be considered originals. Secondly, go for an older Egg, as the patine makes it more beautiful.

Very interesting, thank you!

I agree that those couches do not look as nice as the chairs.

The womb chair design seems to lend itself better to the loveseat treatment.

Love the Womb couch, but it's harder to find than crocodile tears.

And at only $600 you won't mind when they spill their food/drink all over it.

I purchased an Egg chair with fabrics of the European brand Kvadrat in order to get the nicest result for a chair I intend to buy only once. Fritz Hansen was not an option pricewise. The prices they ask are crazy. So I chose for liketheoriginal.com because they could customize according to my wishes with the Kvadrat fabrics. I ordered a Tonus fabric in dark purple. I can really say the chair is impressive. Really, really nice. I hope this helps. Kate
