Macallan FO 12, Glenfiddich 15 & 18

Was out last night at a bar that had as their top shelf the Macallan 12 and the full suite of mainstream Glenfiddich's from 12 to 18. (Pretty poor selection but I was with company and did not choose the venue)

Although I had the Macallan 12 Fine Oak before, last night's tasting was innitially sweet however became slighly more bitter and smokey with subsequent sipps.

The Glenfiddich 15 I didn't find to be anything too wonderful or from memory significantly better than the 12.

The 18 was darker in color, smoother, seemed sweeter than the 15, and overall a definite discernible step up in quality and enjoyment compared to the 15.

If I were to rate my drinks last night it would be

1) Glenfiddich 18
2) Macallan 12
3) Glenfiddich 15.

I am learning my way so my review and opinion can be taken with a grain of salt. I am trying different single malts until I find one that really blows me away. I can't drink 'neat' so each had a single cube of ice that melted quickly. I also found it slighly more pleasureable drinking 3 servings of scotch vs 3 beers or more.

There was a bottle of Highland Park 12 at the next bar we went to however I obeyed the law of the gentleman by not going down the path of destroying myself on Single Malt scotch. I Ordered a Soda Water instead. : )

+1 Definitely more exciting than Macallan or Glenfiddich in my book.

Macallan and Glenfiddich are good everyday drinkers ... I've asked a friend to brind me back a bottle of Macallan 18yo sherry oak which I'm looking forward to.

Had a good chat with a Scotsman behind the bar the other night and he had pretty much the same view of Macallan, Glenfiddich, Glenmorangie ... he said they were all bogan whiskys
