Is everything guaranteed in advertising a lie?

This is kind of a rhetorical question (since I already have my own opinion) but what do you think: Is the lifestyle guaranteed in all the print and media ads you see a lie? Does having the product being sold EVER actually improve your lifestyle or cause other people to behave differently around you as suggested in the ad? If not, WHY do people believe it? If we KNOW it to be false, why do people buy so much of the stuff that gets advertised? (clothing, accessories, cars, alcohol, cologne, etc). I've been moving away from materialism in my life, and I'm generally happier and more interested in other people than I used to be. Of course, the vast majority of people I see are still viciously materialistic, where owning the latest and greatest handbag or car is the most important part of their day. So, has owning a certain item ever benefited your lifestyle? I don't mean the basic necessities that one needs to be passable in public, but more the logo'd, designer, or fashionable items you often see advertised. Has wearing the hot new cologne had attractive women throwing themselves in front of your car in an attempt to mate with you? If not, why do people buy the things that are advertised to that effect?

LOL, I was thinking of switching to a marketing major, then I was like..."wait, I hate consumerism and advertising."

I have a car. I can say with some certainty that my life is better with a car than it would be if I didn't have a car.

But would it be better if it was brand new BMW M-series with LV logo leather interior? And you don't get it for free either

'SALE' has no meaning anymore. 'Going Out FOR Business' signs (instead of 'Going Out OF Business') One of my favourites is in supermarkets where everything is 'Fresh' or 'Freshly Made' or 'HomeMade', which, I have to admit, is more pleasing than the alternative of 'Stale'. 'Rotten' and 'Made In Factories With Cancer-causing Chemicals' Some other lying ads I think of are.. The washing machine (giving you more quality time with the children) Womens anti-aging products..only the models get younger and younger. I want to see the ORIGINAL model from the 1950's to see if the product worked! And what happened to Flying Cars? They promised 30 years ago! And what good is any 'time-saving' device or machine, when now you have to commute longer, work longer hours and no time for anything anymore. Oh hey! those early internet ads, showing 'you' working from home, reclined in a comfortable chair, with one tooth sparkling when you smile. And don't forget everyones favourite.. FLOURIDE (a waste product of the Aluminum industry) It's good for you! (causes brain & nervous system damage) Read the instructions on any tube of childrens toothpaste. If too much is ingested, call....who? the POISON CENTRE. Cel Phones...convenient? You bet! Only they use the very same Micro-Waves that a Micro-Wave Oven uses. Cooking your brain (or genetils) from the inside-out..just the way a Micro-Wave oven cooks! Microwave Ovens...good? Buy 2 plants. Label one 'Tapwater' the other 'Microwave water' Microwave some water..let cool. Water each, one with the tap water..the other only with the microwave water. See what will happen over the coming days/weeks. Those restuarant 'All-You-Can-Eat' Buffet commercials, where they show giant metal trays brimming over with Alaskan King Crab legs & Lobster! But by the time YOU get there, all that is left are broken antennae and shell bits. Oh and here's some reading on Food Photography tricks http://photocritic.org/food-photo-tricks/ Ofcourse they lie. There are nothing but lies. and I agree....why...why are we still buying it all?

This is my response to a watch forum'er asking "Is your watch the most important accessory you can have?"

Many of the responses said they had read that, yes, a watch is the first thing women notice...

"I belong to a men's clothing forum, and we discuss this kind of stuff all the time. Ever notice how, whatever the ad is selling, that's always the product that women "notice first?"

Shoe ads say women notice shoes, watch ads say they notice watches, cologne ads say the same, etc.

The consensus was basically that it's all a lie, ableit a pervasive one. If someone is actually attracted to you based on the watch you're wearing, you may not have chosen the best person to be involved with.

The saying "people buy things they don't need, with money they dont have, to impress people they don't like" comes to mind. Living like that leads to a very unhappy life, because you can never have the "best" of everything, and constantly seeking approval from others is unhealthy and undermines your own self-esteem.

Of course, if you're rich enough that the money you spend on this stuff couldn't go toward anything better, have fun blowing it all! Hell, I have a $200 wallet, so who am I to talk ; ). I've gotten away from the materialism since then though, and I avoid logos like the plague. "
