Madden to retire - Page 2

Collinsworth isn't that bad. He's no Madden, but he is insightful sometimes.

Yes, Collinsworth is okay. I had just become so used to seeing Madden.

mixed emotions (not really). clearly knew the sport, and was a somewhat lovable doofas. but his overexcited commentary and squiggling may be responsible for the what we know today as 'color commentary'. almost any sport is more enjoyable viewed w/ the sound off, and john madden must take some resonsibility for that.

maybe he got tired of riding around on that bus?

**** next post 4G!

Madden seems to be a very polarizing figure.

Personally, I think he's great and will miss him.

People tend to forget that Madden is also among the best NFL head coaches of all time.

Al Michael calls him the "most important figure in NFL history":

But when you combine all of the aspects, when you take a look at John's career as a coach: He still has the highest winning percentage of any coach who coached a minimum of 10 years. He has a Super Bowl ring. He could have coached as long as Don Shula. But what he's meant to the game over the past three decades as a communicator, not just a broadcaster, but as somebody who could make people more interested in the game, more excited about the game. He brought far more entertainment value to the game than anybody I can think of. Then you throw in the video game as well, maybe the best-selling of all-time, which John was really hands-on with, and how many fans that made.

I'll miss Madden. He was still willing to be himself in today's media where everything is controlled to avoid any danger of controversy.
