While not have a religious bone in my body, religion fascinates me.

honestly the only reason that we are practicing anything is that I have a strong belief that it is good for kids to be raised with religion. I think that if you are raised without religion, there is too strong a chance that you will go searching for it, and that you will find weird stuff. I want my kids to be able to make the choice for themselves when they are young adults if they want to follow religion or not.

That's a pretty reasonable position, and not far from my own. I encourage religion in most people, as I think most people need to feel the reason for living a moral life needs to come from an external source.

Yeah... I struggle a lot myself. I know that I absolutely believe in G-d. I have a serious issue with dogmatic atheism, because I don't really think science has proven He does not exist... and there is no scientific way to prove a negative. Until science proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that one specific theory is the only explanation for life and the creation of the universe, the existence of G-d remains a plausible, if less likely, hypothesis. Beyond that, I understand that most religion is probably 75% superstition and created by men who wished to control other men. Here's the dilemma.. 50% of people are below average intelligence, and need to be controlled in such a way. Like GT said.. the human condition forces us to seek answers. Many won't understand or accept the scientific theories, and there are many more dangerous doctrines than Abrahamic religions out there waiting to fill that void. The funny thing is.. the only people who really know what happens after we die are unable to talk about it. In the meanwhile, I find the games/exercises on this website extremely thought-provoking... perhaps you will enjoy: http://www.philosophersnet.com/games/

I do not claim to be an athiest, let along a dogmatic one. My position is that I just really don't know, but the effective result is I live like an anthiest. I also reject Pascal's Wager, as I find that a very base reason to maintain belief.

I hear ya Piobare... but I don't take Pascal's wager at face value... in other words, I don't believe that the "everything to gain" means you'll be taken care of when you're dead. If there is a G-d, then the goal of life is to be happy and to serve Him in such a way that you are taken care of in the world to come. If there is none, then the goal of life is simply to be happy. For many people, Religion serves that purpose as an end to itself. In that case, why not?.. or at least why belittle them as long as they keep it to themselves (I don't support ANY attempt to govern based on religious doctrine). When I say "dogmatic atheist", that's who I'm talking about.. the Bill Mahers of the world that insist I am somehow unintelligent because I cling to a belief in a higher power. But as someone who was indoctrinated as a child, even though I can easily reject some elements (eating pork, for example), I cannot resist the pull of fasting and observing Yom Kippur or even some of the less grand holidays. I would feel very disconnected from myself if I missed that part of every year.

I agree with all of that. It is sheer hubris to claim atheism is an given, IMO. I also celebrate Xmas, but I do it in the spirit of good will to man and time to spend with family, vs. celebration of anyone's birth. I can connect with the symbolism to many holidays, just not the substance.

Apparently SF can host lucid discussions of religion... just not in CE.
