High end chocolate (anyone have a good site?) - Page 3

My parents run a small chocolate store. Some of the brands they carry from that I remember:

Amedei: http://www.amedei-us.com/
John Kelly: http://www.johnkellychocolates.com/
Michel Cluizel: http://www.chocolatmichelcluizel-na.com/
B.T. McElrath: http://www.btmcelrath.com/
Frans: http://www.franschocolates.com/home.php

I don't know much about this stuff, but some of it's apparently highly sought after by chocolate nerds and my parents have had people come in from all over the world just to buy a small case or two of specific bars to bring home. Local chefs try to buy up as much as they can too.

I live in VA. I went into DC today to the Leonidas store.. tried a few pieces, some good some not so good. I ended up picking about 1/4th of a LB of assorted pieces for about $9. My favorite by far was a white chocolate piece filled with a strawberry flavored cream. The 'signature' piece with hazelnut/coffee filling was a total meh. I'd go back, but I think I can do better. I'll try to track down some of the abovementioned brands locally, and if not, ordering it is!

Leonidas is fine but not at the same level of quality as most of the brands mentioned in this thread, although they may price themselves at that level outside of Continental Europe.

Haven't I done enough to help you already?

Also, I am a small-timer. I don't go around DC sampling fine chocolate.

I am not sure if anyone mentioned this guy in CT:

http://www.knipschildt.com/flash.html

He was on a Bobby Flay chocolate throwdown. His creations look unique enough to interest me in eating chocolate more than once a year. I have not as of yet tried any.

From the Flay site:

Fritz Knipschildt is a master chocolatier who creates cocoa confections combining the very best of savory and sweet flavors, stimulating all the senses. He’s also got a knack for creating beautiful chocolate sculptures. Widely regarded as one of the top chocolatiers in the country, he has been asked by the Food Network to teach a chocolate class to culinary students at Long Island City High School. What he doesn't know is that Bobby Flay has been honing his own chocolate chops to throw down the ultimate chocolate challenge, bon bon against bon bon, sculpture against sculpture. It will be up to our chocolate aficionados to decide who has the best eye for design and the sweetest tooth!

I'll give a second on Teuscher. The Swiss know how to do milk chocolate like no one else.

I like Taza for their bars because they are local (Somerville, MA) and are also a bean-to-bar producer. Once in a while I'll pick up a Vosges Chicory bar for the out-there stuff.

Another bean to bar producer I have heard great things about is Askinosie. I'm keeping my eye out for this to try.

Burdick's, as RJMan recommended is also great for candies, hot chocolate, etc. Officially they are out of NH, but their store in Harvard Square is probably more known than anything else. My wife and I had a small sampler as a favor for our rehearsal dinner guests.

This is a good site for variety: http://chocosphere.com/

I am pretty sure they do not deliver however if you ever in NYC I would go to Kee's chocolates. In my opinion they are a lot better than every other local chocolatier and better than the bigger brands like leonidas, vosges, jacque torrres, choc du maison etc.

Yes they do. I actually tried it there. And when I was in Paris I had a Paris Guide Book, and they were in there for Chocolate so I dropped by. The sales lady was kinda snotty, but became nice quickly when we started making our order for 200 Euros.

In any case, they are good. They had these white golf balls that are my favorite.
