Try me. My Shmooga is a lvl 4 fighter with no special skills, mediocre stats and lousy weapons.
I am too depressed even for suicide, which is what I should do.

Level 4-5 it gets better.

Of all my fighters, the best one was La Prostituee, who has a axe, knife, and a shield with excellent blocking properties. But now two of my characters have pets... 99Luftballoon just limped into level 5 and got a bear, hell yeah.

I still lose matches, because 99luftballoon has very few offensive abilities (Axe, shuriken, that's it), not very high stats (so someone whips out a club and I'm fucked), and no specials other than stone skin. Cosa Bella has the Hammer which has saved her ass several times and the aforementioned La Prostituee is probably my biggest badass. But still, bears are awesome.
