I just got a bunch of the plaids in xs and there a few things that bug me about these shirts.

The button spacing on these shirts are a little odd. On every other button-up I own, I leave the top button undone, but on these shirts the second button is so high on the shirt that it requires me to leave the top 2 buttons open, which I dont really like to do. Fine, I can use a small pin or something to fix this. Not ideal, but could be ignored since the plaid patterns are so nice.

The bigger problem is that these collars look huge and pretty much have to be buttoned down to look right. Unfortunaltely it makes my head look huge and my neck look short when I do this. Im going to have to have the collars trimmed by a tailor for them to look right on me. The weird thing is that the collars arent much larger than the ones on my other shirts when I compare them, but for some reason they look it. Im guessing its a combination of the stiff collar and odd button arrangement that makes the shirts look odd on me.

First of all, hilarious post -- I can picture it now with the shirt buttoned far too high up to a short neck which is completely obscured by the gigantic Gitman collar, thus creating a pedestal effect on which is displayed a huge melon. : - )

Second, seriously, I can confirm what you say -- I've picked up several Gitman button-downs over the last year or so and they all fit roughly the same: if the top button (only) is left open, then that second button can seem a little high. It's not necessarily a bad thing though. It's just a very neat & tidy look. Sometimes I wear them that way, and sometimes I leave the top two open, with a white crewneck T underneath. But I'd suggest sticking with only one button undone if you're wearing a jacket (I saw a couple of photos of me in my new red oxford button-down from this past weekend and it looked a little sloppy with two undone).

And, yes it's true, the collars do look substantial. But I'm tall, thin, and have a long neck, so I REALLY like the effect of that Gitman button-down collar.

Finally, a couple of people asked where they might find some of the latest Gitman shirts -- I get mine locally at Winn Perry, which also does mail order: http://winnperry.com/updates/stock-update/ When I was there a few days ago (to pick up my red oxford) I saw the oxford in white, red, grey (which was very interesting looking), and stripe, and two plaid short-sleeved BDs.

^ I ordered a red oxford from Winn a week or so back, how was the grey one in person? I've been at a constant loss trying to find a nice grey oxford.

Sucks for me that I am short. I also used to be very skinny, but started working out a few months ago and gained about 15 pounds. I hope having the collar trimmed down helps because I really like these plaid patterns. Im thinking something as small as the collar on the cheap monday basic shirt since the collars really arent much bigger than normal collars that Ive compared them to.

I really like the Grey, it's a light Grey. You can wear it in many of the same situations as the White Oxford, it's just not White Looks great with raw denim, in or out, and looks great with ties (plaids).
If you're looking for a medium to dark Grey this is not the one.

Note that link also shows two oxfords that have forever spoiled me for ALL shirts: the Gitman Brothers "Double Weight Blue Oxford," and the "Extra Heavy Dark Blue Oxford."

The "Double Weight" is the most amazing classic oxford shirt I've ever encountered. It's exactly as described: beefy, stout & sturdy (I'd describe it as a thin coat of armour - it molds to your body). It irons up super easy & looks fantastic. It's how I picture oxfords from the 1950s.

The "Extra Heavy Dark Blue" is not what I would call classic oxford material (although Gitman calls it that, and they know quite a bit more about this than I do), but it IS a true work of art. It's very thick yet actually quite a bit softer than typical oxford material. It has a wool-like drape to it. I initially thought it was some sort of work or denim shirt, but as I double-taked on the classic oxford button-down styling & blue-thread-white-thread weave (turned inside out it's actually primarily white), I realized it was something very special indeed.

For me, the only bummer about the red, white & grey Gitman oxfords are that they are made with the "normal weight" 2 ply oxford cloth -- which is a GREAT shirt (I have the white and the red and love them both). All I'm saying is this: if you ever see a "double weight" or "extra heavy" Gitman shirt ... JUMP on it, and you will not regret it.

Hey guys, just a heads up. I'm selling a few, barely worn Gitmans Vintage shirts (all size Medium) in the FS forum.

Was just at Belmont Army in Chicago, and they have the long sleeve version of this shirt for around $90. I think all they had left was a large:

I've had the same problems as sakurababa: the collar is too big and the button spacing is weird. which is too bad, because I love the new plaids, but I know i'm not going to love the fit.

Anyone know of anywhere online stocking this in long sleeve? Ta.

My web searches for the Double Weight Oxford have come up empty. Does anyone happen to know where I could find one in a M?

You should have searched my B&S thread. I sold one in M earlier today. That is a very nice one. If you aren't aware, my experience with it is to size up one from your typical Gitman size. The medium I just sold fit me more like a small.

How does Gitman Vintage compare to Steven Alan Single-Needle in terms of cut? The single-needle is a boxier fit than their reverse seams but it is almost the perfect cut for my body, except for slightly longer sleeves.

After looking at a few measurement I think I'm also small in Gitman, but will it be too slim of a cut like BoO? Anyone with experience with both brands please give some advice. Thanks much!

I don't have experience with SA single-needle, but my Gitman Vintage medium was a little slimmer than my SA reverse-seam medium.

also depends whether you get an oxford or madras/poplin. the gitman oxford cloth is a lot heavier than any SA shirt fabric, so it'll sit different.
