Arise dead thread and LIVE! LIVEEE! LIIIIIIIVEEEE!

I got my own ring trap, have invested in some turkey necks and some super clam. All licensed up. I'm going out tomorrow after work, maybe I'll catch something.

Used to be a mad keen fresh/saltwater fisherman as a kid, reached my teens and gave all my gear away to a cousin...

Just got back into it all, but fly fishing, mostly trout reservoirs and a bit of river fishing now and again. Fresh trout is delicious. I go with a restaurateur friend and he gets his kitchen to prep all the catch before I take my spoils home..

I don't really "get" fly fishing. Seems like something designed to extract the most possible money out of someone while simultaneously boring them to death. But hey, to each his/her own!

I said the same thing until I tried it. Definitely a get out there and do it experience that words just don't do justice to.

And good luck with the crabbing. I've always wanted to try it but living in Chicago makes it kind of difficult. Wife and I are thinking about making a move to the New England area though so maybe I'll get my chance at some point to dig up some clams and go crabbing or lobster...ing...lobstering?

Definitely post some pics.

i grew up with a father who was a serious mean fisherman who was kinda well known in the northeast (for his casting ability from the surf and huge striped bass/blue fish near record catches). so it wasn't fun until i learned everything and could fish autonomously. he also taught me how to catch crabs using rotten decaying chicken and pogies (one of the few things that will get me to retch - i still have a iron stomach and can keep my food down next to gangrenous maggot infested human flesh)... but by the time i got older fishing got fun. some people are just really good at it (not me) just like people who are good at math or have a green thumb... one of my fondest memories during med school was performing a below the knee amputee on a gangrenous leg and then thinking: "damn this would be good for a crab trap"

+1.

I always though it was a bit snobby, but in reality most people who fly fish are perfectly average Joes, (unless you get onto the mega expensive Salmon beats on the Borders or in Scotland).

It's also satisfying because of the technical challenges, floating/sinking line, casting techniques etc.

Today was relatively fruitless. I think there were too many starfish around. I caught several 16 inch wide starfish just like this one. Caught a dozen or so baby Dungeness, and a few smaller red rock crabs. Nothing big enough to keep. Saw two giant salmon "get away" from the fishermen trying to land them from the pier. One of the guys was fishing with a pretty elaborate rig, and big fancy looking lure, the other guy had what looked like a crappy freshwater trout pole. First guy's line broke. He managed to get the fish all the way to the dock, but lost the fish waiting for his net man to run down the dock. Fish looked to be eighteen to twenty inches. Second guy's fish looked bigger than that. Everything was fine until the fish decided to run around the end of the breakwater. It pulled so hard that fisherman's reel actually exploded off his rod and the fish took it with. Poor guy just sat there kinda dumbfounded holding half a fishing pole with no reel. Looked like an amazing fish though.

Dinner? Off one five inch red rock crab? Psh. Not even a snack. I'll take dinner pics when I catch enough to cook.
