Is there even a debate about this?

Although I liked 3 and 4, I never really thought of them as "Die Hards". 2 followed on from 1, it referenced the first, they shared the Christmas theme, many of the same characters were in the movie, McLean was still a fish out of water, etc.

3 and 4 were great action movies, but didn't really seem to tie in at all with the others, or each other.

My "official" ranking 1: Die Hard. A - It has not only the best villain of the series, but one of the all-time great movie villains. (Hans Gruber is drastically underrated in my opinion) B - It set the formula for not only the Die Hard franchise, but it popularized the entire genre of tough, wisecracking vigilante trapped in a space versus overwhelming odds movies. Imitation being the sincerest form of flattery and all that. C - All star cast. Aside from Willis and Rickman, Reginald VelJohnson, Paul Gleason, William Atherton, Robert Davi, and Al M'Fing Leong are in this movie. 2: Die Hard With A Vengeance (Die Hard 3) A - Jeremy Irons is Hans Gruber's brother. Clever twist on the original plot. Instead of a robbery disguised as a terrorist attack, its a robbery disguised as a revenge plot and a terrorist attack. Instead of being trapped in a building, McLaine is forced to exhaust himself by running around NYC and jumping through hoops. If the first movie was Guns+Claustrophobia, this one is Bombs+Agoraphobia. B - Samuel L. Jackon is an angry black man. Nuff Said. 3: Live Free Or Die Hard (Die Hard 4) A - McLain is indestructable. B - The annoyance that is Jusin Long is counterbalanced for a mini-crush I have on Mary Elizabeth Winstead. 4: Die Hard 2 A - It's like they made it a point to see how many references they could make to the first movie. It was sort of annoyingly formulaic, but entertaining. B - I like the shootout in the baggage area.

1,3,2.

There are only three Die Hard movies, but unfortunately there's also a film where John McClane takes on a stealth fighter. Fail.

I agree with this. 1&2 were the only true Die Hards. 3&4 were entertaining, but almost belonged in a different franchise. My opinion is that 1 is the best. I agree with Slim that Hans Grubber is one the best villains ever. For god's sake, the man wore bespoke suits and quoted Plutarch! How often does a villian do even one of those things?

1 is basically the action movie by which i judge all other action movies.
