Male Skincare Blog

Hi guys, i'm about to plug my new blog so feel free to delete this if i'm not allowed to!

After about 4 years of studying skin and skincare products i've decided to start a blog because I always have a lot of friends asking me skin care questions. The blog is called Skin Care for Men (imaginative, I know) and you can find it at www.scform.blogspot.com.

In the blog i'm planning to cover everything from individual product reviews to how to build a proper skin care routine, recommendations based on research, the lastest advances in anti-aging, men's cosmetics, tips, tricks etc.

The plan is to build a regular blog devoted to male skin care where you can find the best products for your skin. Like the plethora of blogs devoted to female skin care but...for guys. If you leave comments with your individual requests/concerns I can steal your ideas and post about them. So come and check it out!

Thanks!

Thanks for posting. I'm looking for the best option to get rid of darkness and wrinkles around the eyes. Got any thoughts on that?

Also, what would be the best thing for pimples near the mouth (and NO it's not the herps)?

Well darkness can be hereditary but it can be worsened by a number of factors including sun damage and lack of sleep. Firstly, eye creams are a scam - they're just repackaged face creams - so don't shell out your money on one of those. I would recommend you use a Vitamin C serum underneath your eyes every day and night, followed by a good sunblock during the day. You'll see a dramatic improvement. As for the wrinkles, try the Olay Regenerist line - it comes highyl recommended by dermatologists. Just buy the face cream and dab it underneath your eyes after the vitamin c serum at night. If the wrinkles are quite deep you may want to use a retinoid which is the only ingredient FDA approved to be called 'anti-ageing'. I'm planning to elaborate on retinoids and vitamin c serums in my blog either today or tomorrow so keep an eye out.

Thanks for the suggestions. Any recommendation on a Vitamin C serum? I'm looking for value and not high end stuff here.

Try Avalon Organic Botanicals Vitamin C Vitality Facial Serum or Avon Anew CLearly C Face Serum. Don't forget your sunblock or all the work the serum does will be reversed. Also try a BHA solution for your chin pimples. You can find them anywhere, just look for 'salicylic acid'. Try Stridex pads.

Is the Egyptian Magic a spot therapy, or do you apply it your whole face? Are you in America or Europe? I've never seen it on the shelves before, but I'll be looking.

Any additional sun protection posts are welcome. UVA protection is all I'm really interested in.

Either really. You can apply it to specific patches of dry skin and irritation, or all over your face if you need a good hydrating pick-me-up. Make sure you just tap it into skin, it's too thick to massage on. I live in Europe (London) but I picked up my jar in the USA. You can buy it online, too. I'll be doing much more sun protection posts, currently testing a sunscreen with a PPD of 31(!).

Do you consider the environmental working group's safety ratings in your reviews? http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/

I now buy products which have a 0-3 rating according to their scale.

Hey, I like the blog and am learning about products I already use (st. ives) and some I've never seen

What's this about facial highlighters though? I have never seen, nor have I heard of such a thing. Anyone want to chime in with real world opinion?

Also where do you recommend purchasing facial products? Is there a good source online? Many of us in smaller cities are limited to Sephora and department stores such as Saks for anything nicer then what you'd find at a drug store.

Facial highlighters are a cosmetic product that you use to bounce light off your cheekbones and nose, it's like an optical illusion to make them look more defined. It's sublte makeup but not something every man needs to or even would wear. Just a recommendation to guys who use cosmetics and an alternative to those who wear stuff like blush/sparkly bronzer to accentuate their cheekbones (not a good idea on men, lol). There are lots of reputable websites on the internet that sell good, fresh facial products. I'll be writing a post about the ones I that I use but for starters check out skinstore.com and drugstore.com.

Specifically, I would love a product that is ONLY concerned with UVA and nothing else. I never burn, and most UVB protection just makes products feel heavy and/or give that washed out look. I don't care about broad spectrum or SPF, just UVA and nothing more.

I wouldn't consider anything by the EWG. That group has a horrible reputation. As with many environmental causes, hysteria overshadows evidence, and they are unfortunately still popular and trusted.

I like how you worded that. There's too many environmentalists out there that make a mockery of science it's almost enough for scientific-minded individuals to disagree based on sheer principle. We would have a lot less problems today if they didn't kill nuclear energy, for instance.

The irony is that a good understanding of science will generally give a person a more conservationist perspective.

I'll be reviewing sunscreens periodically on my blog so keep an eye out for new reviews. I'd suggest you take a look at the european sunscreens from La Roche Posay, Bioderma and Avene. They have sunscreens with low SPF (UVB) and high PPD (UVA).

Also I second what reggs said about the EWG. Many of their statistics are misleading and a lot of their assertions are plain untrue. Groups like them are responsible for the new trend of organic products. While i'm all for the use of biodegradable packaging and chemicals, the fact is that a lot of chemical substances work better than their natural alternatives and completely safely.

Take parabens for instance. We consume far more parabens as part of our diet than we would absorb through our skin from a lotion or cream - it's absurb to avoid them if you don't actively pursue a paraben-free diet, too.

Hmm, thanks for the links, I guess I shouldn't take every thing at face value. I guess its just a matter of black boxing different products and seeing what works best. I've been sampling many of the Anthony Logistics products and they seem to work well for me.
