What should I bring to a party tonight?

Thread Starter
I'm going to a social function tonight. The hostess is making the main course and a few other things, but there's going to be a shit ton of people and more food is always appreciated.

What should I bring? I kind of want to do some kind of old-world baked dessert, I do make pretty good baklava, but it really has to sit over night to be at its best. Any suggestions? I'm also considering bringing some kind of salad, maybe a tabouleh? Anyone got a good recipe?

I would make two batches of biscotti and a lemon rosemary cake. I think they work great for large parties as everyone seems to love biscotti, and the cake is something old-world but most people don't eat. Also both items work great for the host/hostess as breakfast the next morning. PM for a recipes if you'd like.

Depends on who your hosts are, I would think. Is it a "dinner party?" Have people been instructed to bring non-dessert foods?

Personally, I am always irritated when people bring food to a party where I'm cooking. I understand that this is a personality quirk of mine, but my reasoning is that I have a theme for a meal - maybe it's Italian, or Japanese, or whatever - but if someone brought their swedish meatballs in a crock pot to my sushi party I'd be pissed. Not everyone is like me, but just be aware that we do exist, and know for sure whether your hosts are.

Desserts are generally better because dessert is dessert. Well, at least, my personal neurosis ends at dessert.

This would annoy me as well. Luckily most of my friends still don't know how to cook...

I'd say go for a dessert, and the baklava sounds good.

Just bring wine.

I would honestly stick with wine, or like everyone else suggested, a dessert. I love a wide-assortment of dessert. Take a little of each and my sweet-tooth will have its needs fulfilled. Most people at the party will appreciate the dessert more than another entree.

+1 on the wine. Unless, as Douglas alludes to, guidance has been provided by the host on specific food items.

Paella - feeds many, tastes good and is unique.

I always find that a couple of grams of coke and some condoms are useful at a party.

Your milage may vary

(condoms are more afterparty, but you never know when a spare room is free)

In my experience, one can not go wrong with bourbon and hookers.

God, if you brought wine I hope you didn't bring some cheap ass bottle. There is nothing worse than having someone bring a a $5 bottle of wine, thinking they contributed to the party, and going on to drink the $20 or $30 bottles that the host bought.
