Tokyo! (The Movie)

Thought I'd pass along a thumbs up for an interesting movie called "Tokyo!". It's actually three completely separate shorts rolled into one movie. Each part is focused on or set in Tokyo. Definitely not a Hollywood movie. There's no way the stories could have come out of U.S. culture.

Each piece requires a bit of thinking, which is why I like them. But there are some great visuals and even some intriguing, simple special effects. No anime... but still some "out there" cinema.

One piece is about life & love & society.

One is about racism in Japan, but done in a brilliant and entertaining manner.

And one sheds some light on a woman's viewpoint on her role in life, or perhaps on her role in life in Japan.

All of them are "fun" to watch. It's entertaining. If you can't find anything worthwhile from Hollywood (few and far between, in my opinion) then you might like this.

Sounds cool. I am a huge fan of Japanese culture and art so this sounds like something I'll have to check out. Thanks for the rec.

I sort of wished that there were some Japanese directors involved in this.

Gondry, Carax, and Bong Joon-Ho are great and all, but Tokyo! is sort of a hollow echo of Paris je T'aime without anyone who understands or fully appreciates the city in more of a multifaceted way. It sort of failed to do any of that for me. It was a weird social commentary that could have been filmed nearly anywhere, and two somewhat generic love stories.

You cannot capture, or even HINT at the spirit of Tokyo with three shorts like this. Somewhat disappointing.

Thanks for mentioning this...I am interested to see it.

But, like Slim, I am also surprised there are no Japanese directors involved.
