Pizza and Wine

So we tend to order pizza for delivery on Thursdays, as we're both so burned from a usual work week by now, we do not feel like either cooking or going out. But, we like a bottle of wine.

So, pairings with pizza? Impossible? What are your suggestions?

Not impossible. Try something from around the home of pizza. I love this: http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1024920

Pair with a red wine with good fruit and acidity, like a Barbera. The wine recommended above, while good, may too be rich for pizza.

A medium red from Rioja or Jumilla.

I am jealous of people that can actually go to K&L. I agree with the concept of pairing wine from where the food came from. Have added to K&L wishlist.

Last time, went with this:

Rhone style blend.

Have had a spicy, crisp Reisling before with 'za. Went well.

Matt has a good line to follow. There are some decent Sicilian wines that work well like this.

Chianti is another option.

And if you're doing the New Haven style clam pie (white), something like a Sancerre or Muscadet.

hrm rhone style blend with pizza?... For me you need something to cut through the cheese, which is were acidity (like in a reisling) comes in. Another idea that poped into my head, is a good Verdejo (spanish white).

Agreed in general. Food and wine from the same location, often tend to go together well.

Still jealous Matt can actually go to K&L!

I used to buy beer there with my fake ID when I was in high school. They are a bit more upscale now.

For gulping in warm weather, Vinho Verde?

I think you should go for the champagne...

...of beers!

Yep I'd go with a good-ish Barbera. You can also try Dolcetto. Or any number of crisp Italian whites from Soave & Orvieto to Verdicchio. Verdejo (though not always), Vinho Verde, or Albarino all have decent acidity and would stand up to pizza.

I just purchased a cheese, hand made in Verona, that they wash in Barbera wine. Incredible fruity flavour. Btw, went with this: http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=410337

Yes to all of the Italian wines suggested above, esp. Barbera. I usually go with Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. It is also great with grilled food.
