How to use hair products

I'm new to the whole hair product game (growing my hair out from a buzz cut) and I suspect I'm using products incorrectly. I have thick wavy hair with a little curl. I have to keep it in Coast Guard regs so I have a slight taper and about one inch of top. I like a matte natural looking stlye that's not necesarrily messy but is wavy on top in a Eric Dane or Ryan Reynolds way. I currently have sumotech. I've tried MOP, AC fiber and AC molding clay. I need hold and something to stop my hair from looking "poofy" throughout the day. I also wear a hat at work and would like something that can maintain my look after I remove the hat. Do you apply products with dry or wet hair? Work it into the root or just lightly brush it on the tips? How much do you use? I'm also open to product suggestions. Thanks

I think if you're using the right product, if you're looking for the matte look, but here's some advice I had from my hair stylist in similar questions...look to apply when it is damp, but essentially completely dry. The more water left in your hair, the less product that will actually be utilized. I've been taught to work a dab, after rubbing it in my hands, through my hair as if it is just like shampoo. Hope this helps.

I have very fine hair that's flat and lifeless without product, so I've been using some kind of gel nearly all my life. You'll learn the answers to all your questions after a couple weeks of trial and error. The key time to put it in your hair is as your hair is drying after a shower, when there's just some *slight* dampness remaining. When your hair is completely dry, you'll find you'll need to add a little water to get the right effect. Every product is different as far as "how much" to use. And different types of products have their own characteristic hold. I usually combine two different gels that I'm fond of when wearing my hair up or spiky, but it just takes only one to get a messy casual look. I can't say how well it'll work with thick hair, but I swear by D-Fi's "Pliable Molding Creme" (the one with the blue lid). Just as the name says it's extremely pliable and easy to work with.

If you want completely matte looking hair, i'd suggest applying product to dry hair - applying to damp hair will leave it with a slight gloss or sheen. Try VO5 matte effect clay or texturising gum. With both products, take a small amount on your fingers and then rub your palms together to heat up the product and make it easier to apply. Then just scruff it through your hair and style howver you want it, add more to places that need a bit more control. Both of those products are 'remouldable' which means you can re-style your hair after wearing a hat without having to use any more product and without any nasty white shit appearing in your hair.

Try Jonathan Product - Dirt.

Thanks for the replies. I've heard about Dirt. Does anyone use it? What kind of results do you get?

I would try the Bumble and Bumble Styling Creme. Put it on your hair when it's wet, style, and let air dry. When dry, you can leave as-is, or run your fingers through it to keep it from being stiff.

For one thing, forget about gels. This isn't the 90s anymore. Try different creams and pastes.
