Absolutely. When I was training in college, swimming over 10,000 yards a day life sucked. I was always sore, but damn my body was right on. I also lifted 4 days a week, but being a butterflyer, I never had the traditional skinny swimmers body...

Depending on where you live you might be able to find a place that does Crossfit, corp's fitness, etc. One can show up a couple of times a week and work out in a group and do stuff that's not boring. Plus it's very inexpensive. Do what you like (biking, swimming, etc) and then show up here once or twice a week. That and eat well. No one says you have to go to the gym. Gyms love people like you that show up in January, pay for a year membership, and then never come in again. Gyms are boring (if you think they are) so do what you enjoy.

Not that I'm defending steroid use (and aesthetically, I think bodybuilding physiques look ridiculous), but steroids make things possible for a lot of people that no amount of mere hard work would accomplish.

Oh yeah, forgot about this. If it's convenient, this is the way to do it. Phelps freakish physique notwithstanding, swimmer body = surfer body = what da ladies want.

Here is a photo of my friend who is fit and never used weights in his life. He has a 'natural' looking body. Toned, lean muscles from rock climbing, daily Bikram yoga and cycling. In this posture, he clearly demonstrates a combination of strength, flexibility and balance.

I hate all of the balancing series

Agreed. It's just hard to separate the cult aspects from the fitness. I guess some people need to join a fitness cult to get motivated. I would prefer not to.

IMO, it's pretentious and ludicrous to say that climbing rocks or Birkram yoga produces a more 'natural' looking body than lifting heavy barbells. Also, the idea that being strong necessarily means you are not flexible as well. While bodybuilders don't really care about their flexibility and only care about piling on balloon muscles on their frame, actual Olympic weightlifters are as flexible as your friend. They are also just 10x stronger. Also gymnasts are both flexible and very strong.

I'd rather be able to put 205 kg over my head (like the guy above can) than stand on one leg for an extended period of time. That's a personal preference. The beautiful thing about the human body is that it's flexible and adapts to the activities you do. It's malleable like the brain is. You guys want to be more flexible and less massive (not necessarily 'leaner') than the average person. That's fine. Just don't go around claiming that you're more 'natural' as well because that's just bs.

Agreed. Moreover, who's to say what 'natural' looks like?
