looking good without weights

Thread Starter
ok so im 5'10'' 185lbs at around 22-23% body fat. ideally id like to be around 170-175lbs and around 17-18% body fat. im not really interested in being ripped but i want to lose a little weight and gain a bit of definition. I hate doing weights. i love being active and getting out and going mountain bike riding, snowboarding, playing football etc etc. but just find excercise for the sake of excercise incredibly boring, and i only last a few weeks if i try hit the weights and treadmill.

is it possible to achieve my goals soley through improving my diet and doing these activites 3-4 times a week? any help or tips would be much appreciated

Eat less, eat more protein.

Yes, the battle is won and lost at the dinner table. Use a site like fitday.com and keep track of what you eat. Most people find out when the keep an honest account of everything they eat that they a) overeat and b) eat more junk than they think. Clean up your diet, eliminate empty calories like sugar, get a resonable amount (say 25% of your total calorie intake) with GOOD fats (fish oil, nuts, natural PB, etc.), watch your carbs, keep your protein levels relatively high and your total calories at say 500 calories below maintenance and the weight (and fat) will come off.

Maybe try boxing/just hitting the bag or martial arts? More of a purpose to it and will add some upper body tone.

Then don't excercise for the sake of losing weight, pick a sport you love, and exercise because you want to be better at it

+1. I enjoy lap swimming and do it year round. I swim at almost every city that I visit. I also practice Bikram Yoga at least five days a week. I have a lean, toned natural looking fit body. I've maintained my 30 inch waist.

lolz, i'm curious to know what a "natural" body looks (or how anyone can seriously claim that they've achieved it).

^^^Natural to me means someone who does not look or move like a gorilla. Example of this are inflexible body builders. A natural, healthy body has perfect balance between strength and flexibility, the way we are naturally meant to have. If you look at young kids, they have natural strength and flexibility. As we grow older, it requires daily work to maintain the youthful physique.

Yeah, Bikram yoga is INCREDIBLE for fat loss (not weight loss, there's a diff). I started Bikrams almost 3 months ago and now I have abs when I wasn't really even close by just going to the gym (though I was fit before starting). I don't go 5 days a week though, only 2, the rest of the days are gym days.

I don't know but I find this really hard, I feel that we have opposite mentalities when it comes to exercise. I find that any exercise that doesn't involve moving heavy things or applying power to something bores me quickly. When I have no weights, I feel incredibly unmotivated to exercise. But as long as you exercise somewhat, especially with biking and playing football, i don't see how you wouldn't lose weight and put on a bit of muscle just by cleaning up your diet.

I totally get what Maharlika's getting at, but you make a good point. Put the average American into his "natural" environment where he sits at a desk all day and eats 4000 calories of junk. I'll take my "unnatural" body any day.

Michael Phelps has never lifted a weight in his life and he's ripped. Climbers are the same way. I understand where the OP is coming from but I think in reality most guys are going to have to lift a little to get where they want to be.
