Growing bamboo indoors.

I want to grow a "wall" of bamboo above my computer table. I have a top shelf around 1.2 meters long on which I am planning to put a long, short pot filled with soil. I want bamboo around a meter tall and stacked next to each other neatly 1/4-1 inch wide.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Do I need to plant already grown bamboo and trim it or get little plants and let them grow? Anything in particular I should pay attention to?

Anyway pictures coming soon.

Any suggestions for pots? I want to order one online, probably plastic black/white but something slick and modern looking nonetheless.

more like if you want live bamboo that close together to grow that tall, you will probably need a lot more space in the pot for the roots.

I wonder however if you could grow long shoots and then transplant them close together in a too small pot without a lot of their roots. Would this just kill them or could it keep them green but prevent any possible growth?

Bamboo is nearly impossible to get rid of once it's been planted.

Can someone suggest where I can find a modern looking plastic pot online? Ikea has failed

Not necessarily true - when growing it outdoors, either go for the clumping variety (as opposed to running) or use a plastic barrier.

To the OP, I've looked into this. From what I gathered, bamboo is extraordinarily difficult to grow indoors. YMMV.

I'm surprised how little information there is on the subject..maybe I haven't looked close enough. I would think it's something companies would cling to like indoor goldfish ponds.

individual shoots in a pot seem to be a pretty common thing...but they definately don't grow tall

The plant to which I believe you refer is not really bamboo.

It is not. It's "lucky bamboo" which is not bamboo at all. I believe it actually comes from Africa.

shit! really? it's a separate species? i love my lucky bamboo! mine doesn't seem to grow that much, but it might just be restricted to pot size.

i used to have a regular bamboo in my backyard growing up, and that shit grows insanely fast in the summer

I know it's been a while, but now that I have some free time I decided on Phyllostachys nigra. It isn't an easy bamboo to grow indoors since you need to make sure it doesn't outgrow the pot and once it does you need to prune its 'roots.'

Here is what it looks like:

Now just looking for the perfect pot. If you are looking for some information here is a pretty helpful article:
