I truly, truly hate how dead the Arcade is in the Hyatt Regency downtown. It is one of the awesomest public interior spaces I have seen. Their restaurant/bar is awful though.

Interesting way of putting it. I drove from Detroit to Cleveland once, after flying to Detroit for business. What a horror it is. In Cleveland I'm often up all night taking photos, in Detroit that sort of thing scares me to death.

That Hyatt is one spot that is particularly hurting from the National City/PNC deal. The Arcade is spectacular, but it's all vacant except for the store fronts occupied by the hotel (spa, "gym", etc.), a crappy leather shop and a Greek carry out spot. Ridiculous. And I agree, the bar sucks there, but truthfully, I don't think I've seen any nice hotel bars in Cleveland. The Arcade is right there at E.4th street too... Right near Tower City which has also manifested in to garbage (at least there are still stores there) I think if Cleveland went upscale though, it would price a lot of people out of enjoying the city regularly..... but some changes need to be made

I spend very little time in Cleveland hotels, as I typically stay in various B&Bs, which I find are more accommodating and personal, but I did stay in the the Hyatt in January. I was shocked that it is so vacant when I saw how beautiful the space is. I don't know that I'd want it to go as upmarket, either, it doesn't need a Coach and a Prada, but I don't understand why a space like that couldn't be just a regular sort of a mall, like those I'm used to in the Northeast. Lack of anchor stores, perhaps? I don't know. Such a shame though. About hotel bars in general -- maybe I'm missing something, but I don't know that they are something particularly exciting. They have a niche (at least for me) in that they usually have flexible hours and striking up a conversation is not hard, plus at a good hotel you can at least expect a certain level of service, rarely outstanding, but always solid. That's ok, but I'm usually looking for much better options in any decent city, and Cleveland certainly has that. I can say with some certainty that I'll never partake of a hotel bar in Cleveland no matter how much an exemplar of the genre it happens to be. I have other loves there. But Cleveland has a Ritz-Carlton, doesn't it? I'm surprised their bar doesn't rate, they are usually pretty solid. By the way, I'm not a resident or native, just a visitor who happens to love Cleveland. If I didn't have certain family pressures I'm move there -- my dream apartment was even for sale a short while ago, as well as some beauties in that building at the base of the Memorial bridge. ~ Huntsman

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the symphony. It's amazing.

I think they have a handful of each label.

The hermes thing kinda throws me off a bit (IDK, hermes always seemed too foppish for my tastes), but the list of brands carried is impressive....

They have Hermes ties, I think, as well as lots of womens' stuff like scarves and bags. They doubt they have anything else, as the mens wear is a bit more staid.

Thanks Mr. Magoo, your reply has assuaged some of my fears.

Also, I'm glad this thread is staying alive. Always nice to see some support for the struggling city I love.

They do carry a handful of JL and EG. In addition to its ties, they carry Hermes shirts, blazers, belts, etc. Whether that's good, bad, or indifferent, I don't know.

These have been circulating around for a couple of weeks:

I've lived in Cleveland for almost all my life and, like anything else, you learn to make the best of it. I still have fun here and can usually find something to do most nights.

For quality shopping, Cuffs is definitely the spot. Along with Kilgore Trout.

If you're looking for a fun night out, it really depends on your tastes.

Unfortunately, all of Cuyahoga Country has been in the hands of the same greedy few for the past 3 decades; and nothing significant gets done without there approval or money. So until those people fade away, or we finally get some fresh, outside money or get some younger, creative, open-minded individuals into power, its gonna remain a seething testament to decaying urbanity lacking any real vision for the future.

Those Cleveland tourism videos made me laugh really hard.

Most Clevelanders actually think they're really funny; the local media and the actual tourism board were the only ones offended.

Clevelanders do think they are funny in a raw-in your face-NY type of way. They think they live in a major city or something.

Just got back from a vacation in Cleveland. Will post an omnibus 'Why you should love Cleveland' thread sometime soon. ~ Huntsman
