I need a makeover!

Ok as cliche as that title may sound it is true. I feel unfulfilled with my life right now and I think my self image has a lot to do with that. If anyone has any suggestions let me know:

What I don't like about myself:
  • Five Foot 6. Too Short...
  • 24 Years old and already starting to go bald...I'm a NW 3 on the norwood scale. I've been on propecia / rogaine / nizoral shampoo for the last year and a half but its only halted the progression of my hair line recession. Currently shave down to stubble.
  • Occassional acne / less than stellar skin. Its not horrendous but it just doesn't glow.
  • MY STYLE! I wear a strange mixture of american eagle / j. crew / express. I just think its time to grow up and start wearing more mature clothes that are classy. I want to look good every day (or at least look like I'm trying).

What I do like about myself:
  • My body. This is only getting better as I work out, but I used to be in great shape, then put on a bunch of weight but now I've lost it / retained muscle. I have a six pack, decently chiseled arms, and a cut chest. There is always room for improvement but this isn't a huge concern for me.
  • Good facial structure.
  • Good hair cut (with the caveat above).

What I am planning to change:
  • I need advice finding out about style and how to go about it without breaking the bank. In a years time I want to slowly phase out my wardrobe and have a whole new line of clothes. (I figure these forums are a good place to learn that).
  • I want to develop a morning / night regimen that actually works to keep my face clear / glowing.
  • I want to get in even better shape.
  • I am planning on getting a hair transplant to fill in what I lost (an FUE minimally scarring procedure around 5k).
  • I want to whiten my teeth.

In a nutshell I'm looking for advice. In a years time I want to go from a college kid wearing hoodies and drinking 40's to a young professional that takes better care of themselves and exudes confidence / style. Let me know if you guys have any advice!

Live healthy, dress neatly and appropriately for your station in life, and don't worry about your appearance too much. Try to read more substantive books of both fiction and non-fiction variety. Too much fussing with plugs, neckchains, and stripey shirts and it's easy to look like you are trying too hard. Trying too hard looks terrible.

My advice is that you don't try to fix everything you don't like about yourself in a single thread. Use the search function to read what's already here. There's plenty, for instance, on teeth whitening and skin care routines. After that, break up your remaining concerns into bite-size questions that members can address in topic-specific threads, such as:

What's a good cut for hair like this? (Photo)
What clothing can make me look taller?
Anybody here have first-hand experience with hair plugs?

Also, many of your questions above belong in the Men's Clothing forum rather than in the Body Consciousness forum, so divide 'em up and send 'em to the propoer locations -- after doing some searches, of course.

Thanks for the replies. I know that I can't fix everything at once (or in one thread rather) but would like to fix everything eventually. Made sense to put it all down as a starting place, but I will be searching / will be posting more specific down the road.

I really, really doubt that whitening your teeth or getting hair plugs or buying a new wardrobe will make you feel fulfilled.

I absolutely agree. I think that the self image is just a part of that, or maybe it's jsut the only thing I can think of that could be part of that. Here's why. I have a great job, for early 20's I'm making a lot of money and doing something that has a lot of upward mobility. Do I love it? No, but I sure don't hate it.

I'm going to grad school on the side totally paid for by company. Doing well and again allowing for growth in the future.

I've got a beautiful girlfriend for the last few years and things are great with her.

My health is good / good group of friends / no family problems etc.

I'm honestly having a lot of trouble identifying what it is that is making me feel so unfulfilled. Thats the reason of this post.

The one area I am struggling with is style / image.

I think the problem with it is the age. For some reason people look at you differently and it has rattled my confidence in some cases.

Don't think of your self as too short. Think of your self as Too $$hort as in "Im Too $hort and I'm so hard.. Pimping these hoes on the boulevard" Your short and always will be so its time to come to grips with it. One of my best friends is short and he pulls more ass than a toilet seat. Same goes for the hair, its gone, cut it short and use the 5k to take your girl friend to Paris. (or go by yourself and meet your next gf) edit: I read the rest of your post. By all means get a better personal style but I seriously doubt that material things will solve your problem. Shrink? Find something you really love and pursue that? Or (Insert generic follow your heart advice here).

Learn what you can from what the internet has to offer then get out, unless you get some entertainment from it along the way. A year sounds fine, I'd suggest on concentrating on learning what you need to do for a majority of the first 6 months, with some occasional doing. Then in the latter 6 months, focus on wisely investing on yourself from what you've learned. You may want to consider dragging this 6 months into a year, two, even longer. Changes overnight are hard to be genuine, and you won't be fooling yourself.

First off, I respect you for taking the time to think about this and formalize it by writing it all down and welcome you to the forum. By listing it all off, hopefully a bit of your emotion/pressure will be relieved and you can focus on dealing with all of it. My suggestions... 1. Believe in yourself. plain and simple. You're feeling bad about yourself and aspects and it's normal. Everybody has their own issues and that's just life. Accept yourself for who you are and be happy. There are plenty of people who have all kinds of worse problems and they just get on with life. Frankly, being in a very similar situation to you, i can relate. It would seem like something is missing and theres a lack of fulfillment. Think about this, and try to find what you believe is wrong. Frankly, i doubt it's your "style". I've spent 2-3 years on this board and my cloths have radically changed, I'm not any happier. I'm still depressed. consider going to speak with a therapist who's traint to talk through these things with you. PS - it takes time... 2. but, the nature of life is to live and to learn and to grow. So take those aspects of your list that you can actually do something about. Break them into manageable parts and set yourself goals. Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Reasonable, Timeframed (SMART). And start with one at a time, then add more.

5'6" isn't too bad, you might be able to get away with wearing OTR suits in short sizes. I'm 5'4" and I have to get everything MTM for it to fit

It might be worth you cross-posting the clothing part of this thread into Men's Clothing for more answers...

Are you wanting clothing advice or health advice Maybe would be good if you posted a body shape photo for people to potentially match shades to etc?

I'd say start slow. I'm not sure if you were going to run out and buy a new wardrobe, or whatever, but why not just go slow and enjoy the ride.

Find some magazines and cut out or at least notice and make a note of the things you like. Get some feedback (maybe from the forum) and go from there. You'll probably start to find your style and things that always pop up for you and then you can build from there.

Great advice here.
