Well there is the whole "assortative mating" thing which suggests that everyone pretty much ends up with exactly who they deserve physically as judged by objective measures of beauty. This is assuming the process is not deformed by money or power. Looking at my dating history, I'd say this is about right.

So if you're rather homely, you'll just have to try to find a girl who has really low self esteem OR get rich/powerful.

As for the looks thing, I think guys have a better time of boosting their looks so you can go that route too. A few well fitted suits and suddenly ( ) becomes \\ /.

No more superficial then men can be.

I'm almost positive they don't even take notice of overweight or unattractive guys at the beach or elsewhere, unless they are already friends with them to begin with.

This is not "Assortative mating" - that is generally to do with choosing to mate with individuals who are more or less like yourself genetically.

Yes, people often end up with people of around the same attractiveness as them, but in humans attractiveness includes other things apart from physical attractiveness. Obviously physical attractiveness plays a part but in being attractive to a woman also includes - wealth/wealth gaining ability (more important than actual wealth in younger people) and associated traits, traits to do with social skills (humour etc.) are all found attractive, confidence is also very important.

Although some women find "dark triad" (macho assholes) type individuals quite attractive in a way men would be unlikely to I don't think most are much more or less superficial than men. More superficial than they pretend to be, but no more than we are, and about slightly different things.
