Yes, Mrs. T and I had facials at a spa not that long ago. It was deadly dull boring while the aesthetician (?) put hot towels on my face and then applied all sorts of fruity-smelling balms, creams, and what-not. I had my eyels closed the whole time, there was this ambient 'relaxing music" going on, and it was all wasted on me because I had to pee for the last 20 minutes and kept hoping she was nearly done.

My advice - if it's just you: find a good barber and get a shave. You'll get the hot towels, pleasant banter, and a good shave. All you really need.

It's been a monthly ritual for me. I go to a Russian esthetician and she's great. Her name is Raya. She steams the face, then extractions ( blackheads, pimples, etc. ), then her high frequency machine, then puts on her Russian Seaweed peel, puts on a mask, then off I go. The whole process is about 90 minutes...it's very relaxing. Do your homework and go to a good skin specialist. Fortunately, there are several here in L.A. I've seen Brad Pitt come out of Ernie Benson's Face Place in West Hollywood.

Can I more or less replicate the same thing at home by:
1x week exfoliate
2-3x week face wash with cleanser
daily moisturizer

No you can't. The funnest part of the facial are the "extractions." Trust me on this, you need to have this done.

I've had this done becuase I have pretty outbreak prone skin and it helps.

The change in my skin is pretty dramatic after her facial and using her products. I was using Erno Laszlo and it did nothing for my skin but break me out. Here's a link to her spa in WeHo.

This is a good maintenance ritual with the exception of washing your face only 3 x a week. You have to wash your face at least in the morning and the evening before bedtime. You follow the wash / cleansing with a facial toner to close your pores and then follow with your moisturizer. Maintenance program does not replace the benefit of a full facial.

For the skin experts out there:

I cleanse and moisturize daily but that's it, and I have been happy with the results. I am confused about toning. Every source says avoid alcohol-based toners as they dry out your skin, but then all the good brands keep on producing alcohol-based astringents! What is the deal here?

I used to pay $100 for toner, but now I use a simple witch-hazel.

How do you apply this?

I switched to Witch Hazel (Thayers Rose Petal) and find it much more pleasant all around.
