Recommend me a computer game

My company recently replaced my aging notebook with a new Lenovo Ideapad Y430. All of a sudden I have lots more CPU power and 250GB hard disk space to fill. Please recommend a computer game I can play when by boss isn't looking.

I haven't been paying attention to how computer games have advanced so have no idea what's been happening since, say, 2002.
I prefer single player games. I don't want to have to look/wait for other players. No FPS (Wolfenstein, Doom, Counterstrike, etc.) or MMORPGs. Also I have to be able to save the game and resume it later.

Back when I played games, I enjoyed CRPGs going back to the old Ultima series and Bard's Tale/Wizardry. I think the last RPGs I played and enjoyed were the Bioware AD&D interpretations.

I also liked the old Sid Meier Civilization, and Sim City.

Civilization 4 is incredible.

Sim City 3000 and Sim City 4 are both good in their own ways.

Thanks. I'll look into Civ4.

I install Diablo II on every computer I purchase. It's still a very good game, can be played for a lot of fun offline and disappears quickly with alt+tab or the windows button. Best offline game until Diablo III comes out.

Those were greats.

If you like this kind of empire-building game, the Total War series may be for you. It's empire building, as per Civilization, but the combat mode is real time formations against formations. If you liked the opening battle in the Gladiator, the battles in Lord of the Rings, and in general the chaos of large formations charging at each other, the game delivers. Very realistic, the engine has been used in a lot of military documentaries.

The latest is Empire: Total War, set during the Napoleonic wars. There is also Shogun, Medieval, Rome, and Medieval 2 (from oldest to most recent).

I really liked games, but it's been years since I've played one. Not enough time, what with work and music taking most of my time.

I haven't played any games in a while but a fun one for killing a good 10-20 minutes is "Crack Attack". I have spent many flights hacking away at my keyboard playing that game...

Civ 1 and 2 were awesome. To me, it just went downhill after that. I haven't played Civ4 much though, so maybe I should give it a shot.

"Empire Total War" if you like the strategy and don't mind a fair bit of learning at the beginning and then loosing the next few hundred hours of your life.
