Discuss: Do Body Building Supplements Really Help

Discuss: Do whey or other supplements really help in building muscle mass, or are they merely hype by powder peddling hucksters? Back up your arguments with facts and evidence, please.

Whey does not.

Creatine works.

Steriods work.

You're wasting your money on everything else.

I take a number of supplements and have gone from a pudgy 190 pound wimp to a decently shaped, confident 220 pound guy no one fucks with. Id like to trim down to a svelte 205-210, but that is what the summer cut is for.

All my evidence is antecdotal, but I feel that creatine, test boosters and the like are beneficial, albeit somewhat overpriced. The focus and intensity is definetly there. The price is what keeps me motivated too - dont want to waste the money by not working out.

I think I'm going to get a Double Whopper [ll] after I hit the gym tonight...

lance's point (i think) is that whey does not give you anything that you could already get just by eating regular food. There's no magic properties in whey protein, it's just protein- you could get the same protein by eating cottage cheese.

That being said, I think whey is beneficial for those people who can never intake enough food, so I would say that whey protein does work.

Yes. Lance knows protein works. He just thinks whey proteins are a money hog for places like GNC - over priced and pretty unnecessary. And he's pretty much right. Only benefit whey in a tub has is its easy to consume and relatively low protein/calories ratio.

I have a strong hatred towards NO-boosters and advocates of said products.

Creatine works. Glutamine works. BCAA's work. The other stuff can go to hell.

I was really into lifting in College. For two years, I took everything except steroids. Creatine, Glutamine, Protein shakes, meal replacements, test boosters, etc. But my diet was out of wack. I had moderate gains - maybe 8lb or so over those 2 years. After that, I cut out everything except whey and concentrated on my diet. I didn't go crazy over it, but I consciously worked on getting a ton of protein with whole meals, balancing carbs, and cutting back a bit on sugars. With that, I put on another 15lb in one year and leaned myself out considerably. I think that protein supplements are necessary. I think that some the other stuff works if you're some amateur natural bodybuilder who's already doing everything else that they can to put on size. For the regular dude who's lifting and wants to be a bit bigger, I think that your money is better spent stocking your fridge with eggs, meat, and vegetables.

I supplemented with Whey and Creatine blend on my three month bulk. I put on 5kg with no change in waistline. I think the protein helped with recovery and muscle building - excess calories are your friend.

The creatine blend was a pre-workout energy booster type thing. I feel like I'm on a caffeine drip and can get through very intense hour long workouts.

I'm now on a cut, and can feel the difference in power and endurance since not taking the protein. So YEAH... they work, well these two do.

Nah. Lance read one book that said that protein doesn't matter and now he's convinced that whey is useless.

There was a debate about it in a thread a couple weeks back.

Protein is a money hog? What's the alternative? Buying steaks and chicken breasts cost way more gram for gram. One could argue that protein powders might be necessary for the person who doesn't have time and money to buy and cook so much meat.

This is actually very good advice. I've been sponsored by a major supplement company for a few years and can get pretty much whatever I want for free. I've found that creatine, glutamine, BCAA's etc. help, but good solid food is by far the best "supplement" out there.

There's a lot of evidence that Beta Alanine works well for recovery.

As for BCAA's, there's a bit of a debate as to how effective they really are. So long as a person is already eating a decent diet, supplementing with them might not be necessary. IN any case, they're in my ON gold so I guess I'm getting enough.

creatine, bcaa, glycerine, juice and hgh are all worthwhile IMO. everything else is bs
