What is the best way. Order online, by phone, get in line at box office 30 hours in advance, ticketmaster type businesses, scalper, craigslist?

some artists do presales through their website...

Less and less people are showing up at box offices/ticket outlets nowadays. Getting to one a few hours early is probably your best bet for most concerts. The online/phone thing is a fucking joke for hard tickets. Especially with Live Nation - they are simply not ready for prime time.

These are some of the questions that determine how I would buy tickets:

Do you think the artist will sellout?
Can you get to the box office window(e.g Chicago Theatre) or ticket outlets before the night of the concert?
How many tickets are needed?
How far from the stage do you want to be?

Good question, depends on the venue but I like to be close.

Smaller clube shows : show up.

But if the band is involved w/ livenation, ticketmaster, et cetera you might as well bend over and take it cause you are gonna pay $$$. Some people sued ticketmaster over Bruce Springsteen tickets beingsold out something like a minute after they went on sale. IIRC Ticketmaster sold them to a 3rd party (that ticket master owns), so that the tickets were 'sold out' and they could ask a premium. something like that, though it has been a while and I might have embellished a fewof the details some here and there.

I've always resorted to Ticketmaster. For local opera and such, I am a member of the local club, so I get presale tickets.

God I hate Ticketmaster.

Ticketmaster is a welcome relief after having dealt with Live Nation. It is perpetually amateur hour over there.

Buy leftover promo tickets the week before the show. Seriously. Many tickets are held back to give to industry folks. They are releases to the public a week or so before the show. Seen many artists up front this way. You just have to be persistent. Also, stub hub the day or so before the show. The tickets are worthless after the performer goes on stage...

So how do you get access to these tickets JeffC?

1. I just bought Nine Inch Nails tickets through their presale. I got 15th row, center stage for face value.

2. Just bought floor seats for Depeche Mode using the local radio stations presale code.

3. Club shows I get tickets on craigslist or ebay. Where there isnt reserved seats you can ALMOST always find someone dumping their tickets at the last minute.

If I really wanted to be front stage for a show, Im lucky that I can pay that premium for that privilege.

Locate your nearest Ticketmaster outlet, preferably in a rural location, and be ready to purchase tickets at time of sale.
