Best Outdoor Gas Grill

My Weber Genesis has finally died and in retrospect I really wasn't that impressed with it. Despite the fact that it always rates very high with Consumer Reports, I have to believe there are better options out there; such as Brinkman, CharBroil, etc. Can anyone recommend a decent gas grill in the $750 price range?

Which Genesis did you have? I have a Genesis Platinum (this one http://bbq.about.com/od/webergasgril...apr082205a.htm) and have been very happy with it.

The article says it may take 10 min to pre-heat to sear a steak and in my experience that is not true. If I turn the grill on, go inside to prep the steaks, by the time I come back out (4-5 min) the grill is insanely hot. The three burners allow for good temp control and the design is pretty good at minimizing flareup.

Once I went charcoal, I never went back to gas.

Check out Ducane, they make a really nice grill that will last you a long time.

Did you look into having your Weber repaired?

I have to agree with this. My gas grill died during a cookout, and I decided to fill it with charcoal so I could keep cooking. Now that I've used charcoal I don't think a new gas grill is in my future. Gas is easier, but the flavor doesn't compare.

Weber doesn't seem to have as many btu's at an equal pricepoint of other manufacturers.

I worked at Home Depot for a summer back in high school, so I'm pretty familiar with grills. Weber is the top of the line grill, and the Genesis is good, and usually comes with a 2 year warranty. Ducane is second best, followed by CharBroil. I would not recommend any other brand besides Weber, try a different model and make sure you get the extended warranty.

I bought a Jenn-Air grill at Lowe's four or five years ago (a larger model in your price range), and it has been going strong ever since. Oddly, I've read some complaints on the web about Jenn-Air grills not getting hot enough, but mine has not given me any trouble in this regard.

Granted, a Jenn-Air or the like is not going to rival a Viking, Dacor, etc., but after shelling out for high-end appliances in our kitchen, we really didn't want to spend $3k+ on an outdoor grill.

I bought a Vermont Castings 4 burner model last spring when my Weber died - was a little more than $750, but I am pretty sure that you could find last year's model around that price today (CFM or one of the big retailers might have it). Other than the weight (it is really really heavy), it's a fantastic grill. Heats up quickly, easy to clean, built like a tank but still good looking, lots of thoughtful features, etc., etc. IMHO, it's better than the Weber I had. Did quite a bit of "research" online, but still felt like I was taking a little chance when I bought it - no regrets, other than to do anything other than roll it (in other words, if it needs to be lifted), you'll need a small army.

Ducane is owned by Weber and doesn't have as good a warranty. I think quality has gone down a bit too - I was looking at Ducane when I bought my grill. Jenn Air I think is made by someone else and had some quality issues too.

Bought vermont castings 2 years ago, as it was top raited in comsumer reports and am very happy with it.
