For all you frequent Epauletters, for someone owning zero pairs of pants, which ones (as in style/color) would you suppose one should buy first? 

Wait, you have no pants at all? What do you wear every day??

Chinos are great in general. If you want something a bit more elegant, then go with Walt. First two colors would be navy and khaki for me.

Lol, I have pants. I just want to start completely over. Epaulet, as it appears here, is a quality company and I eventually want to get around to replacing all of my chinos with theirs.

As w4 said, I'd start with Khaki, then Navy (Then I'd say Gunmetal and French Blue) I'd strongly recommend the Walt Regimental Twill over the Rivet Chinos. The Chinos have a very low rise. Walt cut is perfect.

It really depends on how you'll be using them. Will you be in casual settings all the time? How casual? Business-casual? Drinks with friends? Do you need something for formal occasions? What climate will you be spending most of your time in?

Nobody can give you a sense of what you "should" buy first without being armed with that info.

My 2 cents...
Rivet is most casual, and not a dress pant though it can be dressed up.  Walt is a dressier pant, but any cotton, still not a "dress pant" in big time business settings. Rudy is the Walt with a bigger upper block.

In terms of color, grey and khaki should be your first, grey in any wool, khaki in cotton. Then I'd do a bolder color next, whichever you like. Navy is ok, but I find I don't wear navy odd pants too often. Other colors get the nod from me.

Whichever you decide, you'll def be pleased, mike provides a great pant, at a great price.

Many of our customers opt for a cotton trouser for their first pair. Navy and Gunmetal Regiment Twills are the most popular ones, and can be easily worn and matched. Khaki is even more versatile.

You might consider the Olive Canvas as well. I love these trousers, and I've worn them more than anything else this season. It's an excellent year-round fabric, and has a nice neutral tone that's easy to wear but also a little uncommon:

Dropped by the Orchard St. store last Friday after a day of walking around Manhattan. My best friend is a law student on a limited budget and Matt spent a lot of time advising on best value options. I think he will be a future Epaulet customer when funds allow. Mike sent a "guten tag" all the way from Berlin like a boss. I picked up my 3rd Epaulet sport coat and ordered the hopsack trousers to complete the suit with the Caine blazer.
Once again props to Michael, Adele, Matt and crew for top notch products and customer service.

Man I remember going through Check Point Charlie in the early 80's to go into East Berlin. I also remember drinking a bit too much and having an Uzi pointed in my face during one of the worst hangovers of my life. I do hope your mornings there were different than mine...

Question for Mike or Matt or anyone who cares to comment: I'm interested in picking up a shell watch strap:



Looking at different photos, I'd say the NATO strap offered by Epaulet appears to be rather substantial, which is good up to a point. I'm not one of those guys who wears a watch styled after the pressure gauges on a steamship. Watch this will go on is 40mm and the 22mm size strap will fit it.

How does the strap above compare to something similar such as:



What's all the extra leather for on strap in the top image?

Anyone have one of these straps?

For those who own the EPxMackintosh raincoat - how breatheable is it? I really want that thing in my life, but I have heard that Mackintoshes, even with the underarm vents, have very poor breatheability thus rendering them useful in a fairly narrow set of circumstances - ie when it is both very cold and quite wet. Not sure I can drop a grand on such a situational purchase just yet...

I am after a more conservative casual look, so I'd start with Clay, Khaki, Navy and Olive (will there be some in the near future?) in Rivets, as well as different shades of Grey and Navy in Walts.

How much do the Chino's shrink in the waist and the thigh when being washed in hot water?

I've hot water washed and dried a few pairs of the chinos. They definitely shrink some if you do both, but different amounts depending on the fabric. Haven't done just the hot wash. I'll get out a tape measure and post some numbers.
