LOVED the book, LOATHED the movie - Page 3

Starship Troopers. This book holds an incredible nostalgic value to me as it was the book that caused me to begin reading voraciously again in my early adolescence.

the movie sucks until you realize its a huge parody and then it owns

I always liked that movie. My dad took me to see it when I was in the 5th grade or so and I got to see boobies. Didn't realize then that it was a parody but I watched it again in 2005 or so and realized they couldn't have been serious.

The REAL question is how it holds up to the 1988 Anime.

Seriously though, I thought the movie (as parody) was better than the book. Starship Troopers was the only Heinlein novel I liked until I read it a couple more times and realized it was just as awful as his other works.

Haven't read the book yet but I love that movie and I think it's amazingly well put together, assuming you get that every part of how it looks is part of the story.

The book and movie are nothing alike. The movie is very comic-bookish in it's view, action, etc. It's a fun movie, but it so different from the book that they could have just changed the names and not bothered paying Heinlein's widow for rights. And just so it isn't a shocker when you finally do read the book: Dizzy is a man who dies on page one.

Those who liked Starship Troopers in book form must read Ender's Game, if they haven't already. I'm convinced Orson Scott Card purposefully created this book as an homage to Troopers, although it's an excellent book in its own right. Unfortunately, like most of Card's series, I find that this quadrilogy starts out great and then just peters out, though not as disappointingly as the Homecoming series.

Not always. I for one found the movie based on "Deliverance" to be much better than the book.

Godard's "Le Mépris" very much transcended Moravia's novel

I'm a big reader and I don't think any movie ever equals a good book. My wife always laughs because I leave a good movie saying, "Damn, that would have been a great book".

"Charlie Wilson's War"

The book was a phenomenal read that made you want to keep turning the page. The movie was your stereotypical Hollywood garbage that Tom Hanks churned out just to make a quick buck. All the nuance and most of Charlie Wilson's less redeeming qualities were basically whitewashed in the movie. Seriously though, it was a great book that was butchered.
