LOVED the book, LOATHED the movie

Yep. I loved the novel American Pyscho.


The film--not so much. Not only was much of the violence "sanitized" by Hollywood, but the in the movie, the whole thing turns out to be Patrick day-dreaming?


Never have I been so disappointed by a film version of a novel I enjoyed.

the movie and the book are totally different the issue of reality vs fantasy exists in both the movie and the book.

I forgot: Patrick Bateman dressed a lot better in the film, IMO.

Nope, but every time Patrick appears somewhere, there are extensive, and I do mean extensive descriptions of what he is wearing. You oughta check it out!

Well, I think I understood it. In my analysis, the clothes that Patrick wore were a major part of his over-the-top decadent lifestyle which became rather boring to him. It all came too easily, and he became jaded.

Therefore, he turned to serial killing in a maladaptive attempt to bring some entertainment into his "humdrum" existence.


What was your take on the book and the highly detailed descriptions of his clothes, Teger?

The whole thing is a satire on the late 1980s and the yuppie lifestyle. Patrick being mistaken for someone else everywhere he goes is basically a commentary on how all the yuppies were the same. Whether you interpret the book as him being a serial killer or so delusional that he thinks he is killing people while he actually isn't kind of takes a backseat to the statement the book makes about the period and the lifestyle.
