Living in Miami

Does anyone, or has anyone lived in or around the Miami area? I have friends and family there and I'm considering a move there later this year. I'm thinking about taking advantage of all of the foreclosures and buying a condo. I came across the Sunny Isles Beach area which looks promising, but it's about 25 minutes down Collins to get to South Beach and about the same distance to downtown. The good thing about Sunny Isles would be that I could work in either Fort Lauderdale or Miami, because it's right between both cities. I'm also going to look at Miami Beach as well-but it's obviously more pricey than something farther away from South Beach and would be dirtier than a place like Sunny Isles. Thoughts?

I have a condo in the Brickell neighborhood of Miami. I absolutely love it. I'm there on business frequently, and go down for long weekends with my girlfriend. There is so much to do, and right now is a great time to buy.

I was told that the problem with purchasing a condo is Miami is not the purchase price, but the higher property insurance, and uncontrollable maintenance fees due to the lack of unit purchases and tenants. Can anyone with more experience comment?

Bump. Just found a nice place in Miami Beach. I'm considering going with a friend (I have 2 other friends who live there) for a year. I know all the stereotypes, but if you were young and had the chance to live there for a year before grad school, would you do it?

No. I'm in Miami now and trying to get out by transferring to some school up north. But then again I despise the heat and humidity (has been in the 90s with 90+% humidity for the past week. its awful) and generally don't buy into the whole Miami culture too much, just doesn't suit me.

Just FYI: I'm currently living in the Redlands (good drive south of downtown. farming area really) and go to school at UM.

Miami is a great place to live as long as you can deal with the heat.

I think the heat I can handle, it will beat a winter in the midwest. The fall/winter in Miami is nice. The weather is not what I'm concerned about-more or less the people/atmosphere. I know Miami has a huge Hispanic population, but Miami Beach seemed to be a little more diverse. I was determined to go to LA right away, but with the chance to live in this place (pretty amazing views) for a year I figured it deserved some consideration.

Understand that driving time estimates need to be increased to accommodate for the traffic. A 25 minute estimate will probably be around 40 minutes in real time due to all the lights and traffic. Do you speak spanish?

As Rambo said, traffic is pretty bad. I wouldn't want to live there, but then again, I hate most of FL.

No, I don't...but none of my friends or family that live there do and they don't see it to be a problem unless you're in certain industries. I'm not looking make a permanent home there, I just want to experience it. The condo is on the causeway (North Bay Village area), so I wouldn't have to fight traffic to get onto the causeway, which would be a plus. Here's a shot of the living room. The view beats the streets of Columbus.
