I went to one of my favorite restaurants tonight for supper, and had a wonderful meal of country fried steak (although I must say, as something of an aside, the rather alarming change the establishment has made in the past two years with its new chef is, not good. They have a tapas menu now, for example), wedge of lettuce, and pole beans.

Said restaurant is easily one of the top three southern food restaurants in Atlanta, which has dozens of excellent southern food options.

At any rate I realized that there is no finer regional cuisine than that of Dixie's. And by regional I mean American regional, although, good southern food could give most of the rest of the world's food a solid run for the money IMO.

With that in mind: here is a thread to appreciate the exquisite food that is southern food. And I will be lenient and include soul food in this, as its genesis was in the South.

My chicken fried steak was almost transcendentally good. Even though there must have been a tablespoon of grease left on the plate when all was said and done.

ha ha,

I just finished snacking on some collard greens as I'm reading this. I also had some mustard greens prior to that.

Agreed.

My death row meal would include fried chicken, corn bread, collard greens, and black-eyed peas with chow chow. I'd wash it down with sweet tea and follow it with 'nana pudding.

Paula Deen = Southern Food. That's all the Southern exposure I have to the regional cuisine. When I get a chance to visit Savannah, I'll be making reservations at her restaurant and have the real thing.

Paula Dean is mehh. There's more to southern cooking and southern food than just throwing a ****-ton of butter on everything and making googly-eyes when you take a bite.

You've got to either fry it, add animal fat to food, or make a sauce of an animal's rendered fat.

My parents divorced and I lived with my dad in NY while my mom settled in florida. My mom was a ft newspaper editor and a pt antique dealer. She used to pick me up in NY and we'd spend 2-3 weeks working our way down south while she picked antiques at garage sales, flea markets and antique shops. My mom was pretty gregarious and would ask locals where to go for a country breakfast, bbq, and southern dinner.s So started my love affair with bbq and southern food. The last, great southern meal I had was outside of galveston texas at a place called Kelleys. I ordered the grand slam breakfast which consisted of a hamburger size biscuit w gravy, a chicken steak the size of small pizza, 3 eggs and hash browns. Here is a review someone wrote of the place (and the breakfast) if you're interested: http://www.houstonpress.com/2006-08-...breakfast/full som
