If I'm correct they're APC "City Pants" cut but in denim. A very bad idea indeed, although I'm a big fan of the wool city pants made by APC.

I don't think so. They were clearly labeled with the "New Standard" label.

Okay, so if one is 6'3" with a 33" waist and is interested in a pair of APCs that are somewhat normal fitting (not too tight in the thighs, but definitely not full or baggy cut) what do you all recommend? - APC rookie

montecristo #4, you should get the rescue cut. the sizing is random so I don't know. probably 30 to 33

If you are a true 33 waist (same as I am), don't have huge calves and are in good shape, I would recommend you get the New Standards in size 31. I personally wear a pair of 32, but these are really, really big in the waist for me (as I've said before, I like my jeas to hang loose and sit low.) Great true straightleg (at least for my 5'11", 32" inseam frame - a taller guy would find them slightly tapered), lower rise than the Rescue, despite what the APC website says. The Rescue is more straightleg but has a higher rise. They are also *very* generously cut at the waist.

How "generous" are the Rescues in the waist, relative to the New Standards? My waist measurement is ~34".  I tried on some New Standards, one a 31 and another 33, at a local store, and the 33 fit OK but was too tapered  and had a bit more room in the waist than I'm used to.  Based on this, I ordered a Rescue in 32. I'm getting conflicting reports (even from APC Mail Order.) regarding shrinkage for Rescues too.  Some say around 1" in the waist, others say hardly any.  Some say 2" in length, others no. Why do I even bother....

it probably depends on how they are washed/dried. i dont have much information to provide.. but i can say the new standards i tried on in a 29 were way too big on me. they were big in the seat and thigh and hips... i usually wear a 29 in other brands, and my actual (measured on skin) waist is 30". the store didnt have anything smaller..

I'm the same measurement as you and wear a 28 in NS. I tried 27 but they weren't comfortable.

The whole thing sounds like a complete crapshoot to me. In any case, I violated all sorts of coolness rules by ordering vintage wash New Standards. God knows how the sizing will be affected since they are obviously not raw. In any case, I went with a 32" for my 33-34" waist because my thighs are somewhat large. In any case, when I receive them I'll do a pre-wash measurement and let everyone know how they turn out.

What? Ordered vintage wash APCs? Get out of my store, no soup for you. Seriously though, I think that the 32 will probably still be a bit big for you, unless you wear jeans the way I do, low and loose. I am a true 33 with pretty defined legs, and my 32 APC new standards are by far the loosest jeans throught the waist, butt and thights that I have in my lineup right now. I sort of like the whole *anti* fit thing, but it's not for everyone.

You are probably right, but I just couldn't bring myself to order a 31. We'll see what happens -- I figured erring on the large side was better than erring on the small. And there are others on this board (e.g. Get Smart) who have bought New Standards that are only 1" on the large side. So I think it's kind of luck of the draw. Damn French out to hose us Americans however they can.

yep, my new standards were tagged 33 but were 34". i washed them and they shrank a tad, to where they are closer to 33 than 34 now. from *my* experience, i'd say you made a good choice in the size you went with. If i were to buy another pair, i'd get the 32s as well (sounds like our waist sizes are the same)

Well, my vintage wash New Standards showed up today. The fit is real tight through the things, but tolerable. The waist is a couple inches too big. And I think I need more of a rise as well. Here are the measurements I took (also posted to the measurement page): Size: 32 Waist: 17 Front rise: 11 Back rise: 13.5 Based on this, I'm going to send these back in exchange for a Rescue in size 31, which I think may be a better fit for my body (although I'm not a huge fan of boot cut). I'm not thrilled about the process of breaking them in myself, but what the heck, you only live once.

montecristo, "boot leg" for APC means completely straight. Don't worry about flare or anything. Sounds like rescue should do it just right - a little bit higher rise and a looser leg.
