Contacts - Page 2

I got lasik and it's the best thing I've ever bought with money. 20/15, baby. If you can, start saving up, it's WELL worth it.

I've also had contacts. While they were good for what they were, I hated touching and messing with my eyes so much. Still better than glasses though, but certainly more work.

I have worn contacts for about 20 years. For the past few years I have moved to daily disposables and love them. No cleaning, no storage and every morning a fresh pair on my eyes. But they cost about $1 a day (from an online discounter). That cost may not be prohibitive but I know when I was your age I couldn't have afforded it. After daily disposables I think the regular daily are the healthiest choice. I tried extended wear and monthly disposables etc. but they became very uncomfortable after a few days.

I struggled with glasses. My peripheral vision is very good and my hand eye coordination is also very good. I tend to move my eyes first, rather than move my whole head, which meant glasses didn't work for me. Similarly, seeing some things in focus and some out of focus made me feel very ill.

When I switched to contacts, it was unbelievably better. I don't use my glasses ever now. Any minor annoyance like cleaning or dry eyes is worth it to me to not deal with the problems of glasses.

I'm gonna pick up my prescription and try to order the daily disposable ones, I like the sound of those better and i got a pretty decent part time job so I think I can afford it. So I gotta go to an eyeplace get fitted for contact lenses and make sure they give me a brand I can buy online for cheaper.

they're good but they're a bitch when they make your eyes dry, or when they irritate your eyes

I wore glasses during most of my school career. Some people look better with glasses. Most do not. I did not. I tried a couple times over the years to go down the contacts path, but always had trouble getting them in and out with no problems. For whatever reason, that change about a month before I graduated high school. For me, it provided a big boost in confidence, since I tended to project a nerdier image because of the glasses and not that well-read image a lot of college girls swoon over.

So after nearly six years of regular contacts use, here's my take on the matter:

Pros

- Look better
- More functional when physically active
- More functional in certain types of weather (i.e. rain)

Cons

- Dry eyes. I've got an astigmatism in my left eye, which requires a somewhat oddly shaped lens. It's usually not a problem, but it can lead to occasional dryness or irritation after extended wear.

- Cost. I got lucky in that up until a couple weeks ago, my mom's insurance covered anything eye related. I'm off her insurance now, which means I'm paying for my own stuff. It's not super expensive, though. I spent about $60 for a box each of the left and right lenses. The rights can be used for four weeks, meaning I won't need any more until the fall. The lefts last two weeks, so it'll be the middle of summer before I need to re-up.

I highly recommend Acuvue's "Oaysis" contacts. I just switched from regular Acuvues. With Oaysis I wear them non-stop for 2 weeks (maybe taking out one night and cleaning with peroxide (e.g. Aosept cleaner), then throw them away. This cut my yearly contact bill almost in half. Plus I don't have to take them out or put them in each day, which saves a bit of time.

After 15 years of regular Acuvue I swithced to Oaysis, and am much happier.

awesome, well from what I've red there seems to be no reason to not have contacts and glasses. I'm gonna do both but use contacts more, I have a very youthful face and glasses just don't work on me.

Sweet!

Myself, it's not the cost of the contacts themselves that bothers me. It's the fact that if you live in the states you need to see your optometrist every year (or every 2 in some states but of course not mine) for a "fitting", and that fitting ends up costing between $100-130 where as a standard eye exam can be had for like $35. I did some research and it turns out other countries don't have these laws about contacts.

Anyway, you're young so you'll probably want to have them checked once a year as your prescription is likely to change. But I'm a little older and have had the same prescription the last 3 years. So what I did was order my last set of contacts online from a company in Canada, where they don't sweat the once a year exam.

I do think your eyes are something you don't want to take chances on, but at the same time I'm so sick of being screwed by the system, you know?

definetley contacts over glasses, like others said, get lasik if this is an option.

I've been wearing contacts since I first started getting a paycheck. They are : Expensive as hell, they dry up all the time, and get sand stuck in them. One seems to always go off to the side at the worst times and will give me double vision. $600 for a year supply for me. The 6 month order packs never last 6 months. I have to pay extra because I have astigmatism, and if I don't get the weighted contact, it's blurry more than 50% of the time. But I don't like glasses. So I put up with it. Im looking at getting Lasik soon though, Im tired of paying $500 for glasses and $600 for contacts each year. And it's a pain in the ass for sports and when I travel, as I have to lug around eye drops or the contact lens solution and take them out each night... Look into lasik if your eye's have been stable for the last 2 or 3 years, thats what i'd recommend. I look like McLovin when I wear glasses so I avoid them at all costs....

Are you counting the exam and fitting in that figure? $600 a year for contacts is A LOT. What brand are you using? I also have astigmatism and I pay $120 a year for 4 boxes (year supply) for B&L soflens 66 30-days.

Well I love contacts, but I always appreciate I nice pair of eyeglasses. My frames change every two years or so, but I like to be on top of the frames fashion at the time (if it suits me that is).
